.375H&H Barrel length… what say you?

Does anyone know how much barrel length is needed for a 375 H&H to burn all the powder?

If not, I bet Hornady would be happy to consult.

Personally, that would be my minimum length.

The powder burns quickly like in the first foot, but pressure and velocity continue to increase beyond 30 inches (in a case like this, obviously a 22 lr doesn't follow this rule).

You pick performance you're comfortable with in a gun that handles well without chasing the highest velocity possible.

Respectfully I think your answer over simplifies and might be inaccurate.

But what do I know, I'm just an arm chair expert!

If someone has Quickload it would be easy enough to get theoretical data. My uneducated guess would be 20" is plenty for most powder/bullet combinations.

We've seen one actual report in this thread of a 25fps loss per inch reduction which is fairly consistent with my past research across various calibers.

So all the way up to where the thick crosshair ends is barrel and can??
Very strange.....
On all my scoped rifles I dont see the barrel......including my Wannabe actioned 338 Lapua with a 30 1/2 inch barrel and a can on the front.......and no it is not a hunting rifle just a fun gun.....

My view is similar when using a longer range scope such as a 3-15x42. I see very little of the barrel or can.

The picture i posted is using the 1x setting on a 1-6x. much wider FOV.

No good for dg I can assure you......

Fine as a client rifle, probably better as a client rifle than some little back up scope like an aim point or a RMR.

Client's job is to kill something as quickly as possible, with as few shots as possible. Ideally 50-300yards away. The rifle must be used for everything from duikers to elephant or buffalo.

Guide's job is to kill something to prevent it from eating or killing the client. At any range, but normally 3-50 yards away.

They are different rifles, and have different roles.

The best would be the 1.7/2.5- 10 type 5x zooms.

https://www.trijicon.com/products/details/tr22. I would put this on a client rifle, and it could also be used for Leopard. The similar product from Swarovski, Zeiss or Schmidt Bender would be a better leopard choice. I prefer locking turrets, even on a 375. So I'd pick something like this:
https://www.nightforceoptics.com/riflescopes/nxs/nxs-25-10x42-compact. This is one of the toughest scopes on the market, survived the Rockslide scope toughness test.

I would put this on a client rifle , BUT only if I was hunting in thicker stuff.

I would put this on a PH rifle and leave it at 1x.

Aint gonna kill dg as quick as possible when the bottom half is barrel and can in the scope.....

I was not aware that scope picture had an impact on bullet impact or velocity.

Thank you for the information :)

So you quite happy with the bottom half of the scope view filled with barrel and can not buffalo? Amazing....

Well, on 1x it's practically a red dot and should be used with both eyes open, no?
Depends on the shooter some use only 1 eye.....irrespective.....how does one properly aim when the barrel and can is in the bottom half of your scope view????this is the problem for me anyway.....if others manage kudos to them I would not be able to.....especially on a dg rifle...

Well, that's the point. With both eyes open, your brain doesn't "notice" the barrel and can. Look up Bindon aiming concept and it'll explain in more detail. I would obviously advise practicing this before going on a DG hunt.

I’ve got a BRNO .375 with the factory 25” barrel, plan is to have it cerakoted, synthetic stock & 3 position safety as an all weather rifle.

Question being, for you guys that have had several different barrel lengths of .375’s; what’s your preference on barrel length?
Some will say it depends on your hunting environment, anticipated shot distances, etc. My thought is 23” or 24” is perfect.

My own custom BRNO was cut down from 25” to 24”. I’m happy with that.

Now if I lived on a homestead in the Alaskan bush, a length of 21” or 22” might be preferred since that would make it handier and a bit more maneuverable while traversing thick timbered areas as well as in the alders and bramble-bushes along rivers where the big bruins hang out. Not to mention feisty moose.

This was from one of my posts a while ago I shortened my cz550 Inch by inch

Experiment complete .... as non scientific as it may be I did put out the crony and knock an inch off at a time till I stopped at 21" this was my sweet spot for me personally

Honestly I thought I wanted it a inch or two shorter until I shot it a bit and used it and it just feels right so I stopped there

So with factory federal 300g rounds I lost exactly 100fps on several test rounds from 25" to 21" , it averaged 24-25fps on every inch I took off which I'll be honest I thought it would be and increasing curve as length was shortened instead of being equal amounts, not sure why my train of thought I'm just a dumb redneck that lives in the woods but I really thought the shorter I went the more it would lose per each inch and I was wrong!

For those of you that wanted numbers on shorter barrels I appologise I really expected me to like the shorter side of things but the rifle just fits and feels perfect to me I just can't keep whacking away I'm too attached to it now ... I was very very surprised at how exact my numbers were for the rounds used
Several test rounds started at 2599 fps and my ending numbers on 5 shots @ 21" 2 were 2499 exact so I believe it to be pretty justified answer for me on my particular gun ,

yall have a great day and thanks for all the knowldege I know these test have been done before so nothing new here but sometimes you gotta do it yourself and I do appreciate all the help and input
For a redneck living in the woods, from a Cajun redneck living in woods, appreciate your real-world data. Given cartridge bore/case ratio, 25 fps per inch seems the valid rule. Thanks.
Just validates that I "need" a 22 inch barrel .375 H&H.

I’ve got the stock ordered with custom LOP and I’ve found a smith to bed it, I’ll send him the rifle, then get a feel for balance and test accuracy.

Then either leave to barrel alone or adjust accordingly.

If the barrel needs to be shortened I’ll have a NECG front sight installed and the muzzle recessed, AHR 3 position safety, AHR Trigger, Warn QD rings and black cerakote finish.

Are you sure about the argument of the can obscuring too much of the target animal when viewed through the scope as in the posted example with the DG Lab at 10 feet! Would someone please post a similar sight picture photo as viewed with open sights on a double rife! See if lower half of the target animal isn’t totally obscured at close DG range by the muzzles of the double rifle… after all isn’t the open sighted double rifle the one DG rifle against which all others are judged ?? In the opinion of many, a clubby, muzzle heavy, iron sighted double rifle’s shat don’t stink for DG work. :)
