416 rem, 416 rigby, 458 win

I just purchased a Ruger Hawkeye in .416 Ruger and it out performs my
.416 Rigby. The ammo is less expensive and I think I like the shorter barrel length and a the lighter rifle. Check it out. You might be surprised. I have problems loading the Rigby to chamber in my magazine rifle, but my Ruger #1 will accept every cartridge. Good luck

I own 2 of the 3 (416 Rigby and 458 WM).

If I were to be only one for dangerous game hunting it would have to be the 458 WM. It's the most affordable of the 3 when it comes to factory ammo, it's available in a variety of loads (400gr, 450gr, 500gr) and rifles chambered for it will be more affordable given the standard length action.

If you are a reloader the 458WM makes even more sense. You can load anything from 250gr to 550gr for every application possible.

Load it down to sub 45-70 ballistics up to bull elephant stopping ballistics.

If dangerous game is on the menu I'd think it has to be the 458 and I'd go with the Lott. Then you have 2 ammo options to work with. The Win Mag and Lott in the same gun. Keep in mind also if you reload the Lott can be backed off for target shooting.

In the end I think the thumpers start at .450 diameter...

I accidentally posted this in another thread but will repost for the sake of the OP… In the DG cartridge thread @Fatback had said the 458 was uncomfortable shooting at the range so this was my reply…

“I hear you on that and that is why I said to the OP to make sure he can handle the recoil of a 458. My 375 H&H is 10lbs and a pussycat to shoot. My 458WinMag is 8lbs without a scope and bases and hits your shoulder at over 70ftlbs! It’s a handful!”

So again when looking for a DG rifle/cartridge make sue you are comfortable and can shoot the heavy recoiling cartridges. There are no flies on the 375 H&H and it is fairly easy to shoot, heck it recoils less than my 338WinMag!
A 458WM should be in the ~10.0lbs range to help manage that recoil. My Model 70 is 9.0lbs unscoped and definitely feels on the light side for the caliber. Throw on some rings and a low powered scope and good to go.

Thanks. I just purchased a Ruger .416 magnum and reminds me of a mini 14 by its size. My .416 Rigby CZ 550 was stolen recently and on a whim bought the Ruger. She has a short barrel and kicks with a vengeance but the price was great.

I’d go with the .416 Remington.

I used to shoot a .458 Winchester and it’s very good, but I sold it and a 470 NE I had. Replaced them with a .416 Hoffman (essentially the same as Remington) and took delivery of that rifle shortly before Remington announced their .416 offering. If I were buying today, I’d just get a .416 Remington.

It’s an outstanding cartridge, easy to get 2,400+ with a 400 grain bullet. I’ve pushed mine as fast as 2,510 and with a Bearclaw that really knocks the snot out of a buffalo. But, I didn’t like the recoil so backed off a few grains and found recoil much more pleasant. And it’s still very good on any of the large dangerous game.

Reza Call me any time you want to talk about Elephant. hunting and CMS.
I've hunted two Elephant with CMS.
In 13 African safari's and an equal number of North American hunts, BUZZ is the best guide I have ever hunted with.
