!!! UPDATE FOR THE .416 REM MAG BARREL & I NEED ADVICE !!!

Due to having a difficult time getting any response from McGowen Barrel.com for the past 5 business days, I decided to search for another business that does custom made barrels. After hours of searching the internet, I came across Shaw Custom Barrels.com.
From the reviews I found throughout the internet, they showed the business to be reputable and the reviews seem to be actually real (unlike the countless fake positive reviews on sites like Amazon)
I was also given a promotional offer of a 20% discount on my first purchase which definitely helps my budget

I plan on calling Shaw Custom Barrels tomorrow to get some specific information on which barrel contour is the one I should be choosing.

The following pictures further down are screen captures from Shaw Custom Barrel's website which shows 5 choices they provide for the type of contour for a Savage 110:

1) Sporter
2) Standard Magnum
3) Heavy Magnum
4) Varmint
5) Bull

Of those 5 choices, there are only 3 that provide the option of choosing it in a 416 Rem Mag caliber:

1) Heavy Magnum
2) Varmint
3) Bull

Of those 3 choices left, I am not interested in a Bull barrel, and so leaves me with the following 2 choices of:

1) Heavy Magnum
2) Varmint

Please let me know which one of those two is what you would recommend and why you would recommend it for my particular situation of having a Savage AccuStock and going with the 416 Rem Mag caliber. Thanks

From what I can see, the only difference between Shaw's barrel contours for the Heavy Magnum and the Varmint is the taper of the barrel.

At the start of each barrel upon shortly after having left the action is:
1.035 diameter for the Heavy Magnum
1.035 diameter for the Varmint

At the middle of each barrel is:
0.928 diameter for the Heavy Magnum
0.975 diameter for the Varmint

At the muzzle of each barrel is:
0.705 diameter for the Heavy Magnum
0.850 diameter for the Varmint

Considering the the main difference of the two barrels starts at the middle and then goes to the muzzle, I can only assume that this difference in thickness would only effect (aside from the weight of the barrel) the time it takes for the amount of heat to build up and the time it takes to cool down ... in my case, I hardly think there is ANY serious issue with that since I dont plan on shooting too many of those 7-dollar rounds too quickly, ya know

and so that leaves the diameter of the muzzle to consider ...... on Shaw's order form I will be choosing the option for a 5/8 x 24 thread being put on the end of the barrel. Although my dad could thread the barrel for me, we both agreed that I will just pay Shaw to do it since it's only an additional 30.00 for that option.

So when it comes to the differences in muzzle diameter between the Heavy Magnum and the Varmint , and then looking at the muzzle brake for the 416 Rem Mag barrel, what is your thoughts on how the 0.705 muzzle diameter of the Heavy Magnum barrel, and the 0.850 muzzle diameter of the Varmint barrel effects the type of muzzle brake that should be used

.... I would think the differences in muzzle diameter wouldnt necessarily change the type of muzzle brake to be used, but the difference in muzzle diameters would only effect the contrast of where the muzzle brake's diameter meets the diameter of the barrel's muzzle

The difference will be in finished weight and balance.

Do not go with a varmint contour, it will be too muzzle heavy.

A muzzle brake will fit either equally well. They are turned down and finished with the barrel for a seamless fit.

Lija in Plains, MT made my 404J barrel. 28" long, not crowned, not threaded, not reamed it cost $400 in #5 profile. When cut to 24" and mounted in walnut, it was perfectly balanced at front of floorplate. This was for 98 Mauser. Might want to give them a call.
