.416 Rem Mag: Information For Building A Budget Big-Game Rifle ( 416 Remington Magnum )

Barnes and Cutting Edge require specific twist rates. You might want to check their websites. My 404J barrel is 1:14 which as I recall fit comfortably within their specified limits.

UPDATE: SNAP CAPS & HOMEMADE ADJUSTMENT TOOL FOR MAGAZINE LIPS

SNAP CAPS
Within the first couple tries, I realized how dangerous it could be when using live ammo for testing how good the functions are for the bolt sliding forward, grabbing the rim of the cartridge, and the magazine lips guiding the cartridge toward what will eventually be the chamber.

Although being extremely careful to make sure my fingers and any loose clothing is nowhere near the trigger, I'm not completely familiarized with the gun, its trigger settings, and so forth. Therefore its A LOT better to be safe by using snap caps (dummy rounds) than to risk serious injury and damage to the gun from if the firing pin would somehow release and set off a round.

I found these particular 416 Rem Mag snap caps on Ebay with rubber inserts in place of the primers.
The seller offers a large variety of calibers and configurations:

1) Can be ordered in either their original brass case or in black cases.
2) Can choose the cases to have or not have a hole drilled through their side wall.
3) Can choose to have the cases filled whereby they will rattle when shook

HOMEMADE ADJUSTMENT TOOL FOR MAGAZINE LIPS:

I just used standard mild steel since it's certainly adequate for the job.
However, a couple websites sell a similar version that's made with aluminum.
Unlike the online versions, I designed mine with utilizing both ends of the tool whereby having a full length on one end and then a narrow length at its opposite end. I did this because I could do it and not because I already know that it will be useful.

Notice the approximate 20 degree channel cut into each end. This makes the tool more practical to use whereby providing a better holding angle for the user and also for in situations that may require avoiding the tool from coming in contact with the magazine's opposite lip.

I'm not making any adjustment at this time.
Although I have already done a few test runs of the bolt sliding out the cartridge from the magazine and getting some pretty decent results, I first need to wait approximate 2 months for the 416 Rem Mag barrel is delivered and then I will be able to do more thorough tests and see how to adjust the magazine's lips for better feeding.

If this all works, my hat is off to you.

Depending upon what the finished gun weighs, you may want to add weight to the butt stock.

My gun weighs 10 pounds loaded with the scope. I would not want it lighter.

I do not have a muzzle brake, and that may make it shootable without extra weight.

Well please keep your fingers crossed :)
Although things are overall looking pretty good at this point, I discovered an issue with the Accurate-Mag AICS magazine.
It seems to work fairly good when there is only one cartridge in it, but it then goes a bit catawampus when having more than one cartridge in it.
I mean, would be happy even if the magazine is able to properly hold one cartridge for the bolt to feed it into the chamber, but I'm certainly aiming for the magazine to properly feed all 3 cartridges.
Looking like it's going to take a bit of good ol' fashioned trial and error.

I see what you mean by additional weight helping to damper the unwanted recoil.
Yes, I'm hoping the muzzle brake will reduce the recoil by at least a decent amount, but if not, one good thing going for me is the Savage Accustock is ACTUALLY made with a LEGITIMATE recoil pad that's soft/cushioning rubber unlike the COUNTLESS gun stocks anymore that the shooter might as well use a brick and it does just as equal as a job as their buttstock 'pad'

If the pad is removable, you can but a mercury recoil reducer, or just plain lead in the butt stock. Together with the brake, a recoil reducer or lead weight can work wonders.

ASKING EVERYONE TO CHOOSE WHICH MUZZLE BRAKE YOU WOULD PUT ON A 416 REM MAG RIFLE AND GIVE YOUR REASONING IF POSSIBLE:

I know the functions for what muzzle brakes do.
Can be used to reduce the muzzle flash and/or to help in reducing the recoil of the gun.

I have seen a few videos of the 416 Rem Mag and other big bore rifles being shot.
The recoil can be like a swift kick from a mule and the pressure blast can stir up enough debris to make ya think a micro storm came through.

Since this rifle isn't for hunting big game in Africa, isn't for hunting big game here in the states, isn't for competition shooting, and isn't for long-distance shooting but is for having fun with friends n family in the backyard and for making some noise in the neighborhood for those people sleeping too long into the late hours of the morning lol ;)
.... and so I'm not trying to be critical of obtaining the 'perfect' muzzle brake. My main objective is to balance looks with function ... try to use a muzzle brake that directs a large amount of pressure out the sides of the brake in order to help reduce the recoil, and yet have the brake looking a nicely as possible on the charcoal-colored stock that will have a polished stainless steel barrel.

The following muzzle brakes are threaded with 5/8-24

and since Shaw Custom Barrels wont have my barrel finished for a few weeks, I will be posting a picture of someone else's Savage 110 with Accustock and stainless barrel to help in picturing each muzzle brake on the gun

This is just a stock photo to use as a basic reference. My gun will have the polished stainless barrel but it actually has an all-black receiver with jeweled chrome bolt and an all-black bolt handle.
