416 Rigby bullet seating

Larry4831 Lee do make a factory crimp die for the 416 Rigby but you have to do a special order for it and it requires a press that will handle the next size up from standard die thread/size. I have one.

OK, I was not aware of that, I usually order a seating die and set it up for crimping only.

Old thread but same issue with an older but new set of hornady 416 Rigby dies. Sizing due works good, but seating die does not work. The die body is shorter than my 458 Lott die body.

I can barely get it one thread into my press, rock chucker, before it will start to crimp the case.

If I swap the internals to my 458 Lott die all is good.

Anyone else have this issue ?

It is that sliding bullet alignment plug or whatever they call it that causes the issues!

Always chamfer your cases and make sure that little mongrel is moving inside there!

The plug for the crimper part of the die is 1.625 inches long, the pic was just to show how far the case sticks out of the die. I can barely get a thread into the rock chucker before the die would crimp the case at full stroke, without the seating plug even in the die.

Brand new hornady cases. The die dimensions just seem way off for the seating die.

I had the Hornady dies for my 416 Rigby and no issues that bad. I have the Lyman Orange Crusher press and it has the screw in adapter for the standard 5/8 dies, take it out for the larger dies. This means the dies need to be screw further into to work properly. From hazy memory the Hornady seating die went in all right, maybe because of this. Seating was not a problem. I replaced them with Lyman dies just because I prefer them and they were going cheap.

Not sure any of this fits but had similar issues in the past with pushing the neck back on my 416 Rigby reloads and solved the problem by using a better case lube and lubing the inside of the neck with mica or graphite then slightly belling the case mouth. No issues after that for hundreds of rounds.

I contacted Prophet River, where I purchased the dies and rifle a few years ago, just to ask if they had seen this before with the seating die.

They hadn't heard of this , and reached out to Hornady immediately and Hornady is sending a new die body out with no charge for shipping.

Exceptional service from Prophet River . I have had the dies for a few years and just hadn't got around to using them. Great that hornady is sending a new die body, I just hope it is the same length as my 458 Lott body, 4.5 inches.

I did try the die in my old bonanza press, which is still new as I haven't used it much, and with the ram at full stroke with a case in it, the die would not thread in, even one thread. Something is quite out of spec either with the body or that floating guide that can crimp the case .

Will post an update when the new die body is in, hopefully all is good.

Okay so i'm having some trouble with reloading.

It relates to bullet seating- I have loaded 243 and 3006 rounds no worries, and small amount of 375 H&H.

Using this set up I found that the case shoulder is getting pushed back.... upon closer look, my die(hornady) threads are too shallow, so I can't screw the seater die down to engage the thread in the press(Lyman Crusher 2), before feeling resistance on the case would changing dies work or am I up for another press

has any one else experienced this issue? or is just me?

Yes hornady made a bunch of dies that were to short. Contact them and they will send you to correct die body. I had the same problem with a 416 rigby die.

I never liked my Hornady set for my 416 Rigby. You have to get out a wrench and fiddle with the sizing stem which is screw taper fit after use for cleaning which the head of the stem is looking rough after some use and the whole seating die issue. I use a lee factory crimp die for crimping and a Redding ultramag as the press. But for my 2 cents I wish I would have gone with another brand

the body length that the 416 Rigby should have next to the one that was originally shipped.
They will replace the die body like the one pictured with a longer setting die body. Dont waste good brass trying to get the short bodied die to work it will not.

Once you have the correct die body the hornady dies are actually pretty nice for the big bores. I am very please with the seater as it guides the bullet very nicely into the giant hole in the case.
