325 gr FTX vs what looks like a Missouri Bullet Company Buffalo #2 405 gr.

FTX penetrated into a 6th jug and stopped, expansion was excellent, bullet maintained integrity.

405 gr lead alloy penetrated 8 milk jugs and 2 laundry soap jugs, not recovered

@sgt_zim
All well and good but I wonder what speeds both bullets were doing.
I know the 265gn ftx in the 444 Marlin was dynamite on hogs and sambar launched at 2,400+ fps. Things just fell down.

FTX factory is around 2100, my 405 gr loads are a little north of 1600.

With factory hornday 325 leaver locutions loads the 45-70 deer have flip over at the shot and they have worked real good on hogs
Now when I first got the 45-70
With the 405 jsp Remington safe for any rifle
I shot through one deer killing another one on the other side
Both deer had 45 cal holes through both of there shoulders

The hornday load seems to kill faster

If they open bear season back
The 45-70 or the 358. It’s going to be a hard choice

I’m going to get a RCBS 45-405 gas check mold for my 45-70. I like the design, having a wide flat point and gas checks make bullet fit less critical if I use it in different guns. It’s not like I’ll shoot thousands of them anyway.
The Hornandy 300 grain hollow point made a mess of my deer this fall. The cast should be easer on meat.

The 325 FTX has been too explosive, imo. At 1670fps out of a 458 Socom, it literally blew the far side out of a coyote at 65yd. The impact on prairie dogs at 130-160 yards looked like they had been hit by a 22-250 with 55gr VMAX. I won't use one on a big game animal.
The 350-420gr cast I've shot out of my 45-70 have proven to be completely reliable. The 405gr Rem FNSP (unfortunately no longer available) also work very well. Recovered all 3 out of my bull moose. 2 of the 3 retaining over 380gr, 1 after passing through over 4' of moose from the left hip to the right shoulder. All the others have been complete pass throughs. These 405gr loads are just shy of 1800fps.

Yeah, a 325 gr FTX at 2100 fps isn't a real improvement on ballistic arc over a 405 or heavier at around 1600 fps. I've killed plenty of pigs and white tails with the lead alloy bullets, and I can pretty much eat right up to the hole, there's just so very little extraneous tissue destruction.
