475 No2, how usable?

Hello AH group, looking for your advice please.
We have come across a 475No2 double by F. G. Scott, old and worn, but shoots. Assuming it was in good mechanical condition, how usable would it be on DG?
Are brass and bullets available?

As usable as any other 450 to 500 class cartridge. Will kill as well as any of them - that is if you can source components which is not easy these days.
I'd suspect it will need .483" bullets.

I think Bertram still makes the brass, finding bullets I reckon will be the hardest part. That outfit CH4D in Ohio USA can make you dies,.....and if you want to go down the rabbit hole for bullets you can buy moulds from Accurate Moulds and have Montana bullet works make them with super hard casting recipe,...they'll be easy on the bore too..... just my 2 cents

The .475No.2 N.E. from Jeffery has a bullet diameter of .488“ and an original bullet weight of 500grs., whereas the more common Eley version has a bullet diameter of only .483” and an original bullet weight of 480grs.Error reserved.
Which one is it ?

Brass, dies, and bullets are in short supply. Given its age and wear, you’d need to slug the barrel and pin gauge it to figure out what bullet diameter it needs. IF the barrel requires a bullet other than standard size (which is nearly unobtainable in its own right) you’d then need to get swaging dies and another bullet to swage to size. You can only do the swaging on softs rendering it into a client-only buffalo gun or for plains game.

After the above inspections, you’d need to carefully inspect the chambers to see if there is throat erosion which is common. If so, you’d need to ream the chambers clean and lathe cut the unobtainable brass down to a shorter length so they won’t stick in the erosion bulge.

With the supply chain and skilled trade limitations in Zim, I would not recommend such a gun to a Zimbabwean. You need modern, fully functional guns that shoot standard available calibers like 470 and 500 NE.
