505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

The Gibbs and Jeffrey are very impressive at both ends. But I'll take my CZ550 Lott and call it a day. I know MY limit with regards to recoil and getting a subsequent shot(s) on target.

Well if you ever get back this way I will let you shoot them back to back. I think you will be surprised. If you can shoot the Lott you will have no problem with the Jeff.

I have both, and have shot (and hunted) with both. Wayne (AHR) built and tuned my .500 J. Feeds, shoots, behaves like a gem. Lon Paul, tuned, trimmed, customized my .505 Gibbs- and it shoots, feeds, behaves the same. Guns both weight 11+ pounds, and both at 2200 fps, 525 gr bullets, the .500J a joy to shoot, the .505G trigger pull comes with angst. At the end of the day, the romance is with the Gibbs, my confidence is with the Jeffery. Regardless, just get one of them and enjoy a piece of living history!!

I would LOVE too!

Loading issues with 500 Jeff is a fabricated story....never been an issue....

The second shot is half the fun. Getting back up and slamming that second shell home is a rush! Of course you have to do it without dancing backwards...

@zephyr, following your lead, used the Woodleigh manual and rather than using extremes, averaged the charge weights and velocities. Then, calculated the sensitivity of each to charge weight. Used 10lb rifle.

500J ∆FRE/∆chg = 0.41ft-lb/grain

505 ∆FRE/∆chg = 0.44ft-lb/grain

So you can see they are nearly equal. The average charge for the 500J is 114gn and the 505 133gn and this initial difference accounts for 7.5 ft-lb more recoil energy in the Gibbs.

Or you can just use the case volume difference of 16 grains and get 7.04 ft-lbs more for the Gibbs.
Is this significant out of 90 ft-lbs of recoil. Who knows....
Steve

I should point out than in the recoil equation,

the charge gas exit velocity is 1.75x the bullet velocity and this is why folks say large volume cases usually have higher recoil. The recoil energy sensitivity to bullet weight shows this:

500J ∆FRE/∆bullet = 0.24ft-lb/grain

505 ∆FRE/∆bullet = 0.25ft-lb/grain

That's why I use H4895 With 103g I get 2300 fps with the 570g TSX. It's a very accurate load in my rifle as well.

My question is: how did PH Robert Wilson get off several shots in such quick order to put down that wounded trophy lion with his custom .505 Gibbs.

My working theory is: PH Wilson was using handloads, not .505 factory ammo, and his handloads were essentially equivalent to very mild .404 Jeffery velocities (2000fps-ish) with 525 grn bullets.

Yep, that’s my theory. ;)

Man, I had some wild times with my Sako Brown Bear in .500 Jeffery! Brilliant rifle, fed beautifully! Once I put a fine bead on it, it was superbly accurate. The first time I fired it was at an inbound, angry buffalo bull just eight metres away uphill. I shot another troublesome buffalo at two feet out of the kitchen window at a mate’s house where it had been making a nuisance of itself all night. Another bull was removed off the airstrip just before a Cessna was due to land. From 475 grain Safari Raptors to 570 grain Hydros to 600 grain Woodleigh softs, it was brilliant!

It's an amazing caliber. I think it takes me about half a second longer (which could be too long) to fire an accurate second round than with my 270.

My 505 Gibbs weighs 12.5 lbs and shooting 570 grain A Frames I can comfortably shoot multiple rounds quickly and on target. Those whom are recoil sensitive should stick with the venerable 375…

i would say that you are comparing apples to apples, either is a great choice if you want a big gun. glad i don't have to feed and shoot it!

The 505 is a devastating round on both ends if not careful, my buffalo did not take a step, I took a step backwards and fired twice. As my buffalo walked downward I should have repositioned rather than leaned forward and fired. As my friend and hunting companion @Doug3006
stated it kills at one end and maims on the others.

@Jack Stevens, could be.
I ran the numbers for 10lb rifle (not the same powder) with the smallest and largest charge:
charge of 120gn at 90% load density and 2252fps is 91ft-lbs
charge of 159gn at 106% load density and 2191fps is 106ft-lbs
