9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

The 9.3X62 is a great ctg, I’m not getting into which is better. Once a fellow asked me why I hunt with a .375, my answer was because on game like our Elk, angles don’t matter. Aim at what you want to hit & press the trigger. The 9.3 probably falls into the same nitch.;)
And we do have grizzlies in all of our elk areas

Meh. The recoil difference isn't THAT big. A 286 gr bullet at 2350 fps out of a 9.5 lb rifle checks in at about 33 ft lbs. A 300 gr bullet at 2500 fps out of a 9.5 lb rifle checks in at around 37 ft lbs.

375 H&H is no more overkill for deer than 9.3x62. While 375H&H is fast for a DG cartridge, it's quite modest for the world of deer cartridges. The things that ruin meat are high impact velocity (say 2700 fps or faster) coupled with a thin-jacketed cup-and-core that fragments at impact.

Neither of those cartridges will ruin very much meat. I've ruined a good deal more meat with 150 gr bullets fired at 2900 fps than any of the slow-movers I use on deer these days - 45-70 (425 gr at 1625), 6.5x55 (160 gr at 2400), and 9.3x62 (285 gr at 2250)
I find the 9.3 to have a sharper recoil than the 375, it’s more of a push. Stands to reason 9.3 uses faster powder. But less powder so it’s cheaper to reload than the 375.

I'm glad we don't have any grizzlies here in our elk hunting areas. If we did, I'd be leaving my Browning A Bolt .338 WINCHESTER MAGNUM as a back up rifle in camp and hunting elk with my .375 Ruger Guide Gun only because it's SS and lighter than my CZ550 .375 Holland and Holland. Both are excellent cartridges with the .375 H&H lighter on the recoil than either my .338 or the Ruger. I never carry a pistol when hunting big game here, but if I were in grizzly country I'd probably carry my Glock 40 10mm with 220gr. Buffalo Bore hard casts. But I don't want to hunt elk in grizzly country because it's too scary. LOL

Medium powders are pretty common to them both (at least for 286 gr and 300 gr bullets, respectively): Varget, RL15, 2000MR, Big Game, H4350, H4895, etc.

Given the different case capacities, it's easier to get full power loads out of extruded powders with a 375 than a 9.3x62.

At about 9# 10oz, my 9.3 is a little snappy off the bench, but I certainly didn't notice the recoil when I got my cape buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra this past August, and with a pretty hot load of A Frames scooting out at about 2475 fps.

I have both and have shot both a lot.
I have taken buff, eland and leopard with the .375 HH - kills them very dead
I killed my only lion with a 9.3x62 - killed him very dead.

The only difference I see is using a 286gr bullet vs a .300gr bullet and the recoil seems less on the 93x62.

I don't see the issue on this 28 page thread....

@sgt_zim
My Whelen at 9# with full power loads even the big 310s @ 2,455 fps isn't bad off the bench.
The mates 9.3x62 with factory 286s is brutal off the bench. Two different stock designs tho.
He even finds my 250s @ 2,700 more pleasant to shoot than his 9.3. Stock design not just weight is the key.
I once had a little 410 shotgun that would smack you up the chops unmercifully until I took to it with a wood rasp. Cured the problem.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
