Africa Hunting and a Marlin .444!

Interesting thread. I’ve got a model 94 in 444 that I’m planning on taking along on my Buffalo hunt next year, but hadn’t considered using it on Buffalo. I thought it might be fun for some plains game after a buff is in the salt. I suppose with the right bullets it could be used if you treated it like a handgun hunt and got close.

Very cool article! I also didn't know they made .444 nickel cases? Believe it or not, my FIRST rifle at age 16 in the mid '70s was a .444 Marlin! But the recoil proved too much for the skinny kid, so I traded it in on a Winchester M70 .270 (which I still have), cause that's what Jack O'Connor used. But at times, I miss that .444! Like now.
 
After using my 444 Marlin recently on a bison hunt and taking a bison with it, I wouldn't hesitate to use it on almost anything. I loaded up 320 grain Cast Performance bullets at just over 2000 fps and they performed perfectly. The bullet was recovered after passing through a rib, destroying his heart and lungs and breaking the skin on the offside. This was my first experience hunting with cast bullets but after seeing the results firsthand it will not be the last time I use them.

Probably would have found @Bob Nelson 35Whelen making lunch of a recently deceased Grizzly. Ha! And @bruce moulds saying it was a good thing he didn't load Nosler Partitions while stoking the fire and sliding another sausage on the grill.

Live and learn my son. The y were made on the stronger 307, 356 and 375 big bore frame and came with factory porting. They didn't make Mann the in 444 and the y now bring premium prices when you can find them.

A max of 3,000 fpe out of the 444 is no match for 4,000+fpe with a 250 grainer out of the Whelen

You have much to learn young grasshopper. Unfortunately you are also brain washed by Jack O'Connor about the recoil virtues of the 270. Yes it is a good cartridge But there's better.

Why yes, yes there is a better cartridge. It's a .338 Winchester Magnum! Elmer Keith said to get one. Same recoil virtues as a .270. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Elmer also liked his 35 Whelen loaded with 275 grainers. As I keep telling you grasshopper get rid of the little 338 and get a Whelen and load it properly. You WILL be surprised.
