Allure of the Ruger No1

701 - EMWD4DB.jpg

The rifle is a Mighty Mite, 20" barrel, and close to 0.4"-long Slug Jump in the throat allows long COL loading, much like with the .458 WIN MAG.
400-grainers at 2000 fps.
500-grainers at 1700 fps.
Home made cast bullets of +500 grains (FN GC Hardcast PC-Painted) from a mould designed for the 470 NE: sub-MOA accuracy at 1400 fps MV, plus-MOA accuracy at 1650 fps MV.

You can add 300 to 500 fps MV from what is expected in a handgun with either 480 Ruger or 475 Linebaugh factory ammo from Hornady.
What is not to like?

Riflecrank, you need to make a .50 Alaskan in a No. 1. I'm sort of surprised at the .475 Linebaugh, a mere pistol cartridge.

MauserDuff,
Last time I aired my laundry on the .475 Linebaugh Ruger No. 1,
I was told I needed a .500 Linebaugh Ruger No. 1 like was built by John Linebaugh as a companion for his faithful handgunner customers.
Heh-heh-heh.
I have already done too much with 50-bores to want any more of them. Getting too old for that ...
My first Ruger No. 1 re-do was a .416 Rigby that got turned into a .500 A-Square.
TBC.

A different gunsmith did this one in 1999. He sent his work to an engraver for marking, but I got hold of this one before he sent it off.
Years later I got my local Gunsmith to stamp it.
I asked him to get the "2" into exponential position.
That was not unintentional on this one:

So this one also could use some supplementary laser engraving.

The buttstock ammo carrier and slip-on leather pad, dyed black, have become inseparable.
Hitched for life.

High scope mounting allows peep to remain on rifle with scope,
and the Burris X-Tac high rings have a tunnel through them that aligns perfectly with peep.
Make lemonade from lemons.

This rig handle anything sensible.

Or remove the peep and use a low-mounted scope of any reasonable power range,
or a red-dot sight, etc.
The favored hunting load of olde: Barnes 570-gr Smurf-X

Shotgun ammo carrier works well for .500 A-Square.

Best target load was with 705-gr./.510-cal. AAA Harlow bullet:

No guff, a 100-yard 3-shot group shot with that bullet, using a Leupold 1.5-5x20mm scope, shiny gloss black, on the .500 A-Square Ruger No. 1:

Able to do 600-grainers at 2500 fps.
570-grainers at that speed are no problem.
750-grain Hornady A-Max loads with 4.750" COL are accurate from the 1:10" Twist at 2200 fps.
Just as good for kicks as your usual .505 Gibbs or .500 Jeffery.
Stripped for stalking.
