Any Ruger No 1 experts?

It would take awhile to figure out how many different bullet/powder combinations I have run through several different 25s. There are several partial boxes of 117gr and 120gr bullets collecting dust now. Out of 4, 25-06cal rifles, none of them preferred the heavier bullets. All of them liked 100gr or lighter though; down to 75gr. None of them liked the 60gr bullets either.
A Winchester that I sold my nephew, liked a hot 100gr load. All the others have given me better groups in that 3100-3200fps window. The only Savage 99 I still have in 250-3000, likes the same 100gr bullet at just over 2900fps. It really doesn't like the heavies.
@Woodcarver
It's unusual for a 25/06 not to like the heavier projectiles as they have a 1 in 10 twist. Usually it likes to be loaded near max. The one my mate had was built on a M17 action and shot 117gn federal blue box into an inch at 200 yards all day.
The Savage 99 originally had a 1 in 14 twist suitable for the 87gn later changed to 1 in12 to handle the 100gn soft point. Usually the plastic tips are to long.

Upper right was the best group that I day, 6 shot groups with Weatereby Vanguard 25-06 and 2-3 minutes between shots 250 yards off of bench View attachment 454008
@JimP
That's some mighty fine shooting. That's why I love the 25s. Usually as accurate as all get out and plenty of punch out yonder to get the job done. No fuss no bother.

I have a Ruger No. 1 project in .25-'06 just being completed. We fitted a 25" Brux barrel with 1-9.5" twist, McLaughlin forend hanger, Jard trigger and custom English walnut stock.

Reading all these posts on .25-'06 has me wanting to get out on the range and do some shooting.

I'd anticipate that anything off the .30-06 case is going to talk to you a little bit when it goes off. Folks seem to forget that it's powder charge that drives recoil as well as rifle weight and projectile weight.
Pretty sure nobody forgot anything. Powder weight adds recoil to ALL cartridges by varying amounts, not just the pipsqueak .25-06 Rem.
We are talking about the 25-06, you know that right? Wimp round!
You cant put enuf powder in it to make any real difference in recoil with a 100 gr bullet.
Yes, the weight of the charge does add to recoil forces, but you'll have a hard time convincing anyone that 56 grs of powder pushing a 100 gr bullet is going to turn a pussy cat into a fire breathing, shoulder bruising monster.
Well, I guess almost anyone.... :W Dynamite:

I dunno about any great shoulder bruiser either, but it definitely makes noise and has some form of recoil. In a number one I'm sure it's catastrophic as everyone says they kick harder...hahaha!

They do indeed kick hard in the big bad boy cals, not so much in standard cals. His rifle is the B model or maybe even the V Varmint model, cant tell for sure, either way it has a fairly heavy bbl and probably weighs 9# without a scope, which should nicely tame the vicious recoil of the .25-06! LOL. :ROFLMAO: :A Outta:

"tame the vicious recoil of the .25-06". I think that's only when using 120gr. bullets? LOL

I have that exact same rifle, right down to the “200 years..”. I have had it since college and I’m now 60 y/o. Mine prefers 100 grain hornady bullets. I have killed more deer than I can count with it. You made a great purchase.

I have had good luck with accuracy with No 1’s. I may have mentioned this earlier in the thread, but one upgrade I would recommend is a Jard trigger. The Ruger trigger is not very good.

Personally, I stay away from No 1’s in large calibers. 9.3x62 is the heaviest I have owned. It was very manageable but I had it fitted with a pachmyer pad and recoil reducer.

I honestly cannot speak to this vicious recoil or offer comparison. Sadly, I have only ever fired Ruger No. 1's in two calibers: .375 H&H and .458 Lott. Therefore, I am unable to properly comment on the recoil one may expect to encounter in this rifle. If someone should like to further my education, I am open to the experience. :ROFLMAO:

I had one in .450-400 and also .405 Winchester, both were very stiff, but the .450 would give me a recoil headache after about 5 rounds, I dumped it and got a CZ .404 Jeff and it was a pussycat by comparison.

I don't find them stiff. The .375 is very manageable like a light 20 gauge with a slug. The .458 is very fast and concussive when fully loaded much like a 12 gauge pump with lightweight tactical stock and heavy loads. They aren't prohibitive, but they definitely require attention to detail. I'd put the Encore in heavy chamberings as much, much worse in the behavior department. I remember being absolutely in love with the #1 at first firing of it in .375 in contrast with the Encore in .375.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
