Interested in acquiring a double rifle, but wondering if anyone could recommend one that's less than 6k. Im not looking for fancy wood or engraving, needs to be a working mans rifle. balance and recoil management means the most to me. I seen a few that where like 900 dollars, but that's not what I'm looking for, not interested in a cheap rip-off.
Requirements summary, just so I get this straight:
-less than $6000 (steaming piles and distressed but repairable guns go for that)
-no fancy wood (pretty hard to find a quality double that doesn’t have great wood)
-no engraving (pretty rare, you might pay more for a high quality double that was unengraved because it’s an odd curio)
-working man’s rifle (if the working man is a PH, the price just doubled because they require reliability)
-balance and recoil management means the most of all requirements (add $5000-$10,000 since this feature is usually British)
-not looking for a cheap rip-off (then you’re short $10,000 from meeting some to most of your requirements)
Your initial question “anyone building a decent big-bore double for 6 grand?” No, not ever. Every reply was telling you about $12,000-$30,000 decent doubles you might find USED for some price near your target.
Not trying to act like a troll here, but you are really off base on what you believe you’re able to demand or acquire at the price point. You didn’t mean to, but what you wrote reads as a farce to many on here.
Let me redraft your requirements into the most cost effective solution that will meet most of your demands:
A guy wants a lightly used Heym in 470 NE or a Birmingham box lock in 470, 500 or 450-3.25”. A blaser s2 would be fine too. He’ll pay $10,000-$12,000. 24” barrels, ejectors. It’s going to take 6-12 months to find at such a price, can anyone point him in the right direction? When you find that gun at that price, you’ll have a couple days to respond before it’s sold out from under you.
If you want to stick with your initial price target, you’re going to get screwed...expensive tuition.
