NRA, GOA, CCRKBA,
Waiting for my outfitter to get back to me on this. Is bringing a CITES animal back to the US from SA a big issue or does it cost more other than the permit?
Are there other delays or anything else associated with it if it comes back with my other animals?

No it shouldnt be a big issue! There will be a $93 charge from the US-Fish and Wildlife Service for the CITES exam fee. If it is crated with your other animals it may be required to be sent directly to a USDA Approved Taxidermist or tannery.

I was going to have all my taxidermy done in SA.

From what I have been reading it will still need to go to a USDA certified taxidermist or tannery. It doesn't matter if it is a finished trophy or raw.

I verified this with Tom at Trophy Shippers and a couple other sources.

At least those were the new regs as of a few months ago.

What about just a baboon skull (no skin)?

Same thing for the skull-they want to look for grease or fluid and bugs and eggs etc.
primates, birds, pigs have long been subject to close scrutiny for disease

Warthogs need a CITES?

No, it just needs to go through USDA inspection at a approved facility.

To the best of my knowledge, no worthogs do not need cites but do have to be delivered to a usda approved taxidermist or tannery. Primates have to have cites

I’ve been searching around my area in Wisconsin and have not found a USDA certified taxidermist. None of this makes any sense if the animal is all ready mounted and simply adds wasted money to the trip.
Adding up all the damn fees, Africa isn’t so cheap after all.

Long ago I read of the elephant hunters of the early 1900's. They would sell their ivory to pay part of their next hunt. I will hunt Africa but only consider bring home any trophies if they are truly trophy class. The permits, taxidermy, and shipping costs will pay for my next hunt.

Not accoring to the USDA Animal Product Manual. Page 3-20-1. Which is online for anyone to access.

That said, further in that section on trophies it does have a decision table concerning a shipment with both nonprimate and primate trophies and then the shipment is also handled by USFWS and CDC. The first for possible CITES and the latter for disease concerns. In general a fully cleaned skull is fine, and doesn't need to go to an approved facility, that includes a warthog. But I don't know what the CDC says about a baboon. The hide depends on its condition. Is it tanned or just dip and pack? Tanned, again is probably fine, just inspection. Dip/pack would require an approved facility. That applies to pigs and zebras too. I tried tracking down the list of approved facilities and the site it jumped to is currently down.

Scroll to the very bottom of this page and you will find an older post called “cites list” In that thread there are links to multiple other sources that you will find useful and (hopefully) more accurate and up to date

The taxidermist doesn't need to be USDA certified but where your shipment goes does need to be. Most taxidermist will have the shipment go directly to the tannery which is usually USDA certified.

On my upcoming hunt I plan on bringing a finished warthog home. Instead of having it shipped to a tannery my importer has a USDA certified warehouse so it will go to them and then ship directly to me.

That’s what I am trying to plan.
I would be shipping home finished mounts.

Call USFWS on Monday, see what they say. We have an office in Anchorage with the inspectors, they answer questions like this all the time. So track down your closest one and get real answers.

Baboon and Warthog require additional screening and processing for nasty stuff they carry? I learned just this week that the crates they use to ship them must be burned.

I just wonder who it was that made the change from allowing finished taxidermy to be shipped directly to the hunter. My first trip only unfinished mounts and skulls needed to go to the USDA facility but something in the last few years changed to where both unfinished and finished need to go.

I know that it is the US Government but something had to of changed.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
