"Environmental" groups have filed a federal lawsuit to outlaw bear baiting in Idaho and Wyoming. President Trump's administration sought to have this lawsuit dismissed. But a Federal Judge is allowing the lawsuit to proceed. Dismissing objections. Because Judges always know best. The "Judge".....named Candy Dale, agreed... that although the baiting only applies to black bears, it is possible that a grizzly may come to the bait. Based on this reasoning, one should not be allowed to decoy ducks, because a Condor could land in the spread...........Fruitloops and Flakes abound, and this is only the beginning of the 4 year purge of common sense in hunting.........................FWB

Obviously, it may not work for other jurisdictions.

This lawsuit has been in the court system for the last couple years if I remember. When judges allow any court case to proceed, that is not an indication they have ruled for one side or the other. Merely, it is procedural.

Unfortunately the ESA is being used more frequently as a weapon to cudgel acceptable hunting practices into outlawed ones. The timber wolf is a good example in the north central states as well in the western US. Another nail.
I'll say I'm for protection of endangered species, but this is a new world from the '70's era, they can't fit in everywhere in our current land use practices.

It is illegal here to bait almost any type of animal on public land for any reason including photography...we can only use and food or bait on private land...bear can only start being baited on private land here 30 days before season and only using certain items and cannot be killed while being pursued by dogs or in a den.

Same here in Idaho, no baiting or hound hunting in hunt units where grizzlies may be encountered. Been that way for years. Doesn’t stop the anti’s from exploiting any possible means to stop baiting, hound hunting, trapping, etc.

This is more significant than just a "procedural" issue, or a "it's that way here too" issue...for several reasons.
1. The suit could have been dismissed, and in that sense, a decision has been made by a judge( who has never seen a grizzly...)
2. both States currently have significant restrictions on where and how a bear can be baited....already done, states did it right.
3. The 1995 laws that are the basis of the suit, have been rescinded
4. They are not trying to stop blackie baiting in areas frequented by Grizzies, but (as I read it) on all National Forest lands in both States. Some of these areas have no GB, and no recorded sightings of GB's.
5. Sets a precedent for the Feds telling two conservative States how they can hunt...and the rationale....(you might kill the wrong animal) can be applied to almost ALL hunting situations. This easily applies to the duck hunter with a decoy spread, snow goose hunters that could kill a Ross Goose, etc.
Death by a thousand cuts.....just one more.......................FWB

Yes you are correct . They are trying to stop all baiting on all national forest grounds. Whether there are grizzly present or not. Grizzly are just the first excuse to shut down all hunting in all national forests eventually. Some hunters who don't believe in bear baiting are expediting the process. The antis campaign is that "even hunters dont think it should be legal ! " Divide and conquer and yes -----death by a thousand cuts.

Is it just me, or do the vast majority of anti-hunters come from the UK and US? I've talked to many people throughout Western and Eastern Europe (including Russia) and they seem to have no problem with hunting as long it's legal and ethical. Sure, many devout Christians are opposed to it but they've become very small over the past few decades. As for the UK, some of the people there are extremely rabid about their beliefs. Same with the US however hunters there seem to have had a bit of a comeback recently. Antis in the US find any possible way to interfere with hunting in Africa whether it does extensive damage to wildlife or not. They keep using their political muscle and vast sums of money to intimidate and sway the CITES regulations because they never have any scientifically proven data that argue against sustainable hunting. They rely on the fact that most hunters that go to Africa are from the US and that the native African populations are too poor to afford a safari. That fact won't last forever.

As for bear-baiting, personally, I don't know enough on the subject to voice my opinion. Maybe there is a legitimate reason to ban the use of baits. Who knows.

Well i know brown bear hunting with hounds in Russia is kinda big, but I think the main reason anti's are more prevalent in the US and Britain is because of our cartoons and shows that habitutiate us to think animals dance and play in the woods and are human

I agree. With major companies like Disney where they make movies like The Lion King and Bambi, people are going to see those movies as if they apply to real life. I remember reading somewhere that the author for Bambi wasn't happy with Disney's adaptation. The movie ignored many key things from the book which included predators (like foxes) violently killing rabbits and how it's all apart of the natural cycle. I'm not sure if Disney intentionally ignored that part of the book but it certainly had a big impact on people.

Kind of idiotic. For MT, I had to pass their bear identification test before I could buy bear tags. For a Texan who never sees bears, I thought a couple of the pics were challenging. But still...big pointy ears vs small round ones...forehead slope vs no slope...just ain't that hard.
