I haven't been to Africa yet but I wear a Tilley Air Flow when I do ultra-marathons in hot weather; the mesh really does provide a measure of cooling, even when I'm running. I will be taking it to SA in '19, in addition to a more stylish one in case the weather or occasion call for it.

I used a ball cap and a Tilley in SA, I recommend taking both.

I have a hat from www.rogue.co.za it's very comfortable and keeps the sun off my head.

I bought one of the Rouge Airhead hats as well and like it great deal. It is perfect for the hot summer hunts here with shade but cooling air flow. Concealment is not a problem and because I have to be carefull of further skin damage from the sun I would not consider a ball type cap as it leaves the side of the face uncovered and that would invite reflection unless the sun was directly overhead and I would surmise that reflected skin would be more of a "tell" for wary animals than the shape of a hat brim.

..... @spike.t

My mates and I have a standard rule when riding on the back of of the bakkie- whenever a cap gets blown off on the way to a hunting spot, each person on the vehicle with a rifle at the time gets to take a pot shot at the cap once at a safe location....
After the first cap flies...they all tend to stay on the heads thereafter :W Revolvers:

Tilley Air-Flow and a baseball cap. The Tilley while hunting and the baseball cap around the lodge.

I use a bush hat, or in our old army talk, hats rags ridiculous, as in my avatar. I would also use a Kepie style hat as you have the flap covering ears and neck.

I always pack a boonie and never wear anything but ball caps.

Personal preference of cap vs. hat but I have worn a Tilley air flow hat on several safaris and really like it. To me it has several advantages. Folds up for packing, if fitted per Tilley is a loose fit which is more comfortable when it is really hot but has a string you can put under your chin if it is really windy, can soak it in water and put it on for some additional cooling, and it washes well.

I got a Tilley Airflo at Gander Mountain going out of business sale for $40.00.
I was surprised how that thing keeps sweet from running down your face only problem I have is when I'm working on something up close the sweet drops off the brim when you look down.
