Cartridges you just hate

I'm not a fan of the 357 Magnum.

I shot thousands and thousands of jacketed and my own cast bullets for this caliber.

My observation is the 38 special is great for practicing but the 357 has to fast of a snap to its recoil and doesn't deliver much energy or penetration on the other end....

Elmer Keith had it right when he designed and delivered the 44 Remington Magnum.
@ftrovato
And Samuel Colt had it right before that with the 45 colt then J.M. Browning invented the 1911 and the grand old 45 ACP was born.
The 45 is the 30-06 of pistol cartridges. Ain't to many people that will stay standing when hit with a 45.

I usually don't respond to these click bait topics......what is your favorite____________cartridge, color, movie star, or whiskey. But I must say.............the 25-06 is the most useless cartridge I have ever owned. (Ya, I bought two of them). And the only reason I'm saying this, is I have one of them still for sale. (or trade for a good 243)...FWB
@flatwater bill
Just send me that useless 25-06 I will put it to good use.
To me the 243 is the most over hyped useless cartridge ever invented even more over hyped than the 6.5 creede. Dang some eejut even used in on a giraffe with not good results

I don't like the 20 ga shotgun--the 16 ga is capable of heavier, more "square" loads, but even it is not up to a 12 ga., and a 12 can be loaded like a 20, anyway. I don't mind short chambered 12's or 16's, but I loath the 3 1/2 inch magnum 12, and the 3" twenty.
Don't like the 9.3x72 cartridge, "Der Forster" it is called in Germany, even though it is just about a .35 Rem, which I do respect.
I hate the 6.5x54 Mannlicher Schoenauer only because I don't have one and it will take a chunk of change out of my pocket to acquire one, because I would only accept it in a pristine 1903 model, which I desperately covet. All other 6.5's (except the Swede) can go to the devil, along with .17 cal. anything.
I don't like AR platform rifles, nor most plastic stocks. Walnut, please.
I hate any safe queen that could better be cashed in to pay for a hunt.
I hate light for caliber bullets in general, but will make an exception for monometal ones.
And I hate "Christmas tree" reticles.

Not a fan of the 270 Winchester, had to blood trail too many bucks in the South Texas Brush Country back in my guiding days.

Our loaners at the ranch now are 308 and 300 Win Mag, seem to get the job done.

I wonder how guides are finding the 6.5creedmoor as a client cartridge in this space.

Well I don’t really hate them but they’re certainly not for me and that is anything loaded with black powder.
Too much effort required to clean them properly.

I hate muzzleloaders of any kind and they hate me. They do everything in their power to make sure I mess something up when the moment of truth arrives. I killed my first deer when I was 12 with a hawken 50 cal and round ball. It’s been all downhill since then with me and those finicky bastards.
Now that sounds personal!

I really don't hate many things, just don't have any use for something and maybe some people.
.243, 338 Federal.6mm Cred

WSSMs, Weatherby’s, PRCs, ARCs, the 7mm Backcountry already annoys me. I’ll give the WSMs a pass.

All those lever action confused cartridges like the 307 and 356 Winchester

The below was too good not to share, although I love the 257 Bob and the 220 Swift so disregard those.

I’ve always been one that wanted something different, and never liked to go with the crowd. So I’m not a fan of the 6.5 creedmore (never shot one) or any of the new PRC. ...
This is how it usually starts for me.

I was gonna say I have heard of it referred to as to as Rat shot.

...

There are a lot who don’t like .308. Like the .223 it has wide following in Australia. It was used extensively for full bore target shooting along with being offered in semi autos when they were available to responsible shooters. There must be tons of .308 sporters in use here because it just works and is available and affordable. It’s common as muck but it still does the job and for a one gun hunter relying on factory ammo it makes sense.

I don’t “Hate” any of the rifles. There are lots I would love to have and plenty I would pass over. It’s just about what suits your needs and style.
I doubt a rat would die if shot at any kind of distance beyond 1 meter. But I have no experience with that.

As to the popularity of .308, It is probably #2 behind 7x64 in Europe. Most people will say "who needs more" and I will agree but then what does it do that the 7x64 doesn't and if you do not need the 7x64, 6.5 Needmoor will do or whatever else is widely available. 7x57 not as much as I thought but 8x57 still going strong there. Go figure.

I never thought I'd find another person that has my tastes almost exactly. We only part ways on the 25-06.

I thought I was crazy, now I know there's at least 2 crazies. Thanks!
Ha! Good to hear my disease is not that rare. There's two of us at least. Though reading through the replies, I get most of the people. I have nothing against the ones I do not like really, they just do not speak to me and I'm one of last people to jump on any fad. Then again, I thought bitcoin was going to be a fad and maybe it is but should have bought when they were less that $1. Then it wen d up to $100 and I thought: "Screw it, not when I could have had some for $0.96!" I could have been retired now with money for more hunts. :(

So you have one useless cartridge and are willing to trade it for another? :ROFLMAO:

Sorry, just kidding!

Had both. Like both for being able to shoot the "special". Saved the Magnums for "special" occasions. Expensive ammo I thought, slower to recover from recoil, etc. This means I liked the ".308" handgun as opposed the ".30-06". Oh no...what am I doing to myself?

Im not a fan of 300 Win mag or any of these newer WSM/wildcat cartridges that push a plainsgame bullets to mach 4........ Some people are infatuated with velocity which baffles me....Fine if you are shooting past 200 yards consitently, but I have seen bullets not perform at shorter distances. Most of our hunting is under 150m

We've used 6.5x54 MS on impala, warthog and 308 and 30.06 on everything up to Eland, performed flawlessy.

Ive also seen alot of wounding with the wildcat/300wm cartridges. I think it's because they are louder and the shooter develops a flinch to the noise.

no difference in performance between 416 rem and rigby, except pressures on the rem. Rigby requires a bigger action, so it's a no for me. Love the 416rem, hits buffalo hard

I hate communists and the devil. I can’t say that I hate any particular rifle cartridges. I do kind of dislike the .300 Win. Mag., not because it’s bad or wrong, but because it’s introduction basically coincided with the end of the pre-‘64 M70 era, and each time I see a box of it I’m reminded of how little any manufacturers support .300 H&H Magnum anymore.

Not a fan of .243. I've owned a couple, but I found them too heavy for light work and too light for heavy work.

I prefer the .30-06 over .308, but I think that's because my dad used an '06.

I find my own dislike, rational or irrational toward particular types of guns. I don't like AR or AK style guns (not political, I just don't find them attractive) or polymer pistols (I own 2 in 9mm and one in .380) or stainless steel (I own two SS revolvers as well) Somewhat hypocritical, I know.

I like bolt and lever action rifles, sidexside shotguns and double action revolvers.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John buzzardhilllabs@hotmail.com
NRA benefactor, areas hunted, add congo, Mozambique3, Zambia2
Out of all the different color variations of Impala the black Impala just stands out with its beautiful pitch black hide.

Impala is one of the animals you will see all over Africa.
You can see them in herds of a 100 plus together.

This excellent ram was taken with one of our previous client this past season.
