Chainsaws and those who use them

Husky owns several brands.. McCullough, Poulan, Jonsered, Weed Eater, etc..

Apparently they keep / kept all of those brands as separate entities, but they have shared technology, designs, etc between them all… each brand was just intended for different markets

Coincidentally, I just had to bring an old family saw back into service. It's a Craftsman 3.3cu 54cc 20" saw. Far, far overkill for the minimal brush I need to clear. My father gave it to me, not running, a year ago as he had no need for it anymore.

Carb kit for the Walbro from Amazon - $6
New fuel line and filter kit from Amazon - $7
Oregon 20" bar and chain kit from Walmart - $39
New pull starter spring from eBay - $8
New pull starter rope and handle from Home Depot - $5
New plug from Autozone - $4

So $70 all in, I have a quite beastly saw that starts 2nd-3rd pull. Looking at electrics (which I don't like) in the $200 range and a bottom tier Echo for $205, this was the better way to go.

The only thing I will say is the forearms definitely start burning a bit after swinging this thing around.

My next Stihl purchase is probably going to be a “farm” grade brush cutter… I’m thinking an FS ninety one is in my near future

I have a stihl fs131 and a jonsered lil red, the jonsered I got around 30 or so years ago and it’s still running well, that being said the stihl cuts circles around it ( it is 26 or so years newer, and more cc’s as well though).

2050 should be a good saw if not a true jonsered most of the turbos were actually rebranded partners ( good saws in there own right ) if memory serves a 2050 is the same saw as a husky 49 both of which are actually partner 490/510s. I’ve got a couple 2055s which translate to partner 540/5400s.

It works good for firewood and limbing, not enough power for felling, the guy I used to help cut with, had a couple of older metal jonsereds they were beasts but heavy buggers (He was a durable man though, was a captain in the first special service force (joint U.S./Canadien commando unit in WWII), that had gotten blown up some by German artillery), He was in his 60’s and cut circles around me.

When I bought my farm about ten years ago I bought a couple of Husqvarnas. A 440xe and 460 Rancher. I dont know if they are good saws but I have no complaints. I use the heck out of the 440 not so much the 460. Before that I used to run an old remington that was a decent saw for my purposes.

I run square chisel Oregon on my husky/jreds and used to on my stihls but you’ve got to switch out the bars to do it. I ran it because you can by chain by the roll an make them yourself a lot cheaper.

I got the adapters and put Stihl Lightweight bars on all my saws. They are about a third lighter than anything else. Makes a big difference at the end of the day. I run Oregon full chisel Powercut EXL chains up to 28". 32" and up I use Oregon Powercut skiptooth.

Only ones I’ve ever seen were sold to home hardware and on par with poulan which is to say not much.

I like the Oregon lpx chain best, it really seems to bore cut well. The Stihl chain is a very good quality as well. I run Oregon or husky bars (same exact bar).

I've run av gas in my Stihl MS361 and MS390 chainsaws, Stihl weed eater and Stihl leaf blower for years. I also have an EGO battery saw with an 18" bar for the little stuff.

I've noticed a lot of landscapers and lawnmowing guys use Shindaiwa trimmers and saws. I had never heard of them, but supposedly pretty good stuff. Japanese, I believe. They also own Echo.

Unfortunately my Husky 55 gave up the ghost recently….it was a great saw for 30 years.

Working loggers every day, in the SE, Stihl and Husqvarna are the 2 top dogs here. I prefer the Husky myself.

I replaced the Husqvarna 55 with a Husqvarna 555.

On all my saws I run a full skip tooth chain…. They have no anti vibration or low kickback features so pay attention.

Recently in the tread about discontinued products Wyatt smith , Bob Nelson , myself and a few other gentleman were discussing the merits of several brands of chainsaw including some of which that are no longer in production. I thought given that most of us on the forum likely use chainsaws at some point be it commercially as land owners or lease holders clearing shooting lanes and food plot areas ect. We should have a thread discussing them.
