That night we celebrated taking the red duiker and the owner of Leadwood Ranch (who was a PH for many years) kept saying in his Afrikaans accent…what a fooken duiker! As we retold the story, someone’s phone pinged with an update from the wireless trail cameras on bait stations around the ranch. There was a flurry of Afrikaans and Dieter said, “He’s back…get your .416 quick and bring the thermal!” I ran to get it and jumped in the truck and Dieter practically peeled out of the driveway running through the gears.

We drove for a few minutes and then he shut off the lights and we coasted to a stop in the dark. We walk in quietly in the dark (no moon and overcast) for a few hundred yards and then slow WAY down. We are getting close and you can smell something…at this point, we are downwind. We creep in one step at a time and I get on the sticks and turn on my thermal clip on that I attached to my Z6i scope on the 416. As the thermal image settles, I can see them…4 of them but one is much larger. Distance is about 40 yards and the wind is in our favor…for now.

We wait for the 4 images to separate further and the shot rings out and there is an audible bullet strike. He is down. As we walk forward Dieter says…we have been trying to take him for a long time…at least 6 guys have tried but he is very old and smart. He has been showing up on cameras but without a reliable pattern. Congrats on a killer bush pig!

If you think that’s a lot, start shopping Suni prices in RSA. $7-10k (trophy fee, doesn’t include daily rates) is the pricing I was quoted by 5 or 7 different outfitters over the last 2 years. For that amount of money I’ll go to Mozambique.

$3k on a Sharpe’s is a lot. I think mine was like $450 or $500 in Zim granted I was DG hunting and paying a much higher daily rate.

If I really get serious about the TT I’m going to go back to Coutada 10 or one of the other Coutadas around the Zambezi in Mozambique.
I looked back and in 2022 when I was thinking about them I contacted the outfitter I hunted with in 2014 and the prices ranged from $1500 to $1700 for red duiker, blue duiker, suni, oribi and grysbok.

I too have fallen in the trap of getting the T10. It was the last thing I thought I would get into, rookie thinking I guess. I find myself researching where to go to most efficiently to get them, etc... Moz keeps popping up as a great option. I am going to enjoy the long pursuit of this goal. Moz is definitely needed to finish the T10. Their trophy fees are lots cheaper but their daily rates are much higher.

If I really get serious about the TT I’m going to go back to Coutada 10 or one of the other Coutadas around the Zambezi in Mozambique.
I looked back and in 2022 when I was thinking about them I contacted the outfitter I hunted with in 2014 and the prices ranged from $1500 to $1700 for red duiker, blue duiker, suni, oribi and grysbok.

My last part of this adventure was on the last day. We were taking photos, getting packed up and visiting on the back deck of the lodge. Dieter said, do you think you could hit those baboons down below by the dam? I said let's get a gun and find out. He grabbed a suppressed .260 and a sand bag and I get setup on the table. We ranged the baboons at 323 yards and I waited for the wind to settle....took aim...and dropped the big dog baboon with a chest shot. Then we went down and put him on the edge of the water to watch the crocs respond. Here are some videos of that...

I'm seeing TFs of 1500 for them in Moz. Daily rates are 850 though.

I don’t know if they still have it but they did have a TT pkg. it was 10 days, hunting license and a rifle permit. This also covered 4 of the TT trophy fees no matter which 4 you took it was around $10,000.

If I do Mozambique again I would buy the 10 day buffalo pkg and add the TT as my plains game add ons.

For what it's worth, this is the BEST place I know of for a big croc at reasonable prices. There are over 1000 crocs on this private property being hunted by Dieter (owner/operator of Mattanja Safaris and a forum sponsor). You can expect to find 13 footers.

Prices are still in that realm. $1000-$1500 trophy fees for those species. @Green Chile killed an amazing Red Duiker but the areas you’ve mentioned historically have the best chance of producing record book animals from the species you’ve listed.
