As the first phase of considering an African hunting adventure. Choice of fire arm comes to mind. My dilemma is friend of mine has a nice .375HH magnum which he will offer me a family price on(wink wink). Or I sell off a considerable amount of my firearm collection that’s collectible and can get me some money and then go shopping for a brand new sexy Rifle that I really want to make my mistress. It’s very expensive for me in the 8K range, but it’s one of those barrel changers But the largest cross-sectional bullet it shoots as a 9.3 x 62. And I figured as my second barrel for Africa I would get a 300 win mag which I don’t have at all. The sexy girl is that Krieghoff pump action semprio. The plain Jane 375 is an inter arms action built up by Whitworth and has a synthetic stock weighs 9 pounds drilled and tapped no bases or rings and no iron sites which means I would be ending up putting all that on there, whatever that will cost in addition to that the synthetic stock does not have a cheek piece And I fear that thing slapping me in the face gentle push (38# felt recoil) on the shoulder or not. I have a lever action savage 99 featherweight in 308 Winchester with the same set up and then smacks the hell out of my cheek every time I shoot it so to make this thread fun, give me your opinions, sexy chick or mashed potatoes. Incidentally, I did a little Wikipedia reading and found out that 9.3 x 62 used to be the minimum in Africa before the 375 was invented both Pondoro and Karamojo used it on elephants and had nothing bad to say about it. No, I’m not saying I want to use it for an elephant. I am a fan of value for the money and I’m looking at with those two calibers I could hunt other things in north and South America, New Zealand and Europe and pretty much do well with it after the purchase. With the 375 I could end up with a closet princess. It may be a little bit too much For North American game. I wouldn’t get as much use.

I find this difficult to follow. There are a lot of 375s available to buy at reasonable prices. I wouldn’t buy any rifle that doesn’t fit me well and I wouldn’t spend $8k if it limits the hunt I’d otherwise choose. A Winchester model 70 has a well designed stock to handle recoil comfortably and are available around $1700-$2000 and can be easily sold if you don’t plan on using it again. Put any money you save towards a higher quality hunt.

Personally i think you are going about this the wrong way
Book a hunt at Tallyho(thats me) then go and look for the rifle best suited to that hunt if you dont already have it in your armoury

Just my tongue in cheek 2c

I opted for a custom rifle in .375 H&H built on a Mauser M98 for my self gift, still waiting on the finished result, but it is getting really close now. Just got an e-mail yesterday from the engraver stating that everything was finished engraving except for the oval and waiting for hardening/silver nitrating.

What rifles and calibres do you already have?...best place to start....if you hunt you most likely have your plans game rifle already....then can concentrate on a DG rifle/calibre.....i love 9.3x62 but unfortunately isn't legal for DG in most countries....so at min a 375....and from sounds of it I wouldn't go for your friends rifle....as said m70 or there are plenty nice 2nd hand rifles for you to look over.....and don't know anything about the pump action rifle you are talking about...but not something I would want to take out in dusty gritty conditions....and as forget about @Tally-Ho HUNTING SAFARIS book here with us :E Shrug: :E Rofl::D Beers::A Outta:

KINDA LIKE THAT PUMP ACTION.

I have a 30 06 and a 358 when is the push feed and the 358 is a Mauser Ruger Mauser clone actually for the purists if I could afford a genuine Mauser then I could afford an American trophy dall sheep hunt.

Me too, about a year or two after it’s inception they offered it in 404 Jeffrey, but since they’ve just stuck with the standard American calibers ending at the 9.3 x 62 last time I checked. It’s a dream really I don’t think I’m ever gonna make it to Africa, especially now that Marburg is around. I would hate to be a guy that incubates that germ, and then brings it back to my family and somebody gets sick because of me.

I would say, look for a 375 H&H (CZ, Win, Ruger), put a good scope on it, and go hunt. The 375 H&H is good for DG, and plains game. Ask me how I know that. I believe you're overthinking this. Don't wait, go hunt Africa.

I haven’t chosen an outfitting yet, but I’ll keep you in mind since in this forum at least you’re the first two that have approached. The two being you and Tallyho, but as far as YouTube is concerned as a whole slew of them on there, I recently been watching the TIA guys, but they’re all on YouTube.
