Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

Is this ok for starters??

A random youtube video blurred without any face pics..?
Where are your pics of all the dangerous game you claiim to have shot..either way or another..?

I have a certain amount of skepticism about everything I read and see on the Internet. In the age of AI and deep fakes photos and videos can also be faked. What I am interested in is polite and civil discourse and learning from others, not petty arguments. Trust, but verify in other words.

I learned a reasonable amount about big bore cartridges from this thread (thanks for the pictures), but it has become quite a bore as well. I’m ‘unwatching’ and moving on to more enjoyable and interesting threads.

Cheers, gentlemen.

I apologize, @375Ruger416 . I share the exact same sentiments as you. Most of us come to these forums as a means of recreation to take our stress away from the shackles of daily responsibilities. And to share our mutual love for hunting, firearms & Africa. Not to fight with other members.

Thank you, Hunter-Habib. I don’t blame you or IvW for that matter. Something about the medium seems to lend itself to these sorts of disagreements. I’ve been dragged into them myself.

I’m going to watch the Boston Toronto game 7 now. Hope everyone has an enjoyable Saturday evening!

Well, I shot a charging rabbit once, great big mashing teeth on the wee beastie…..
no pictures though, everyone was too busy laughing at me…..mostly as I had stepped in a rabbit hole and was up to my thigh in it when the rabbit came at me.
gumpy

The posting was an opinion on the 577 vs the 600. Why is it necessary to bring personal remarks into the discussion.
I am over 90 and in my life time there have been few if any whose memory at times is incorrect or as is remembered. We are all human, at least once in awhile.
Come on guys this has been and is a great forum let’s not go the way So many others have.
Let He who is without sin cast the first stone!

That's honor you that you are with over 90 still active on a Forum.

It's inevitable that there will be disputes on a Forum because we don't know each other and may therefore misinterpret some postings. Certainly one have to be careful when posting so that comments are not misinterpreted, especially for people like me who don't come from English-speaking countries. Despite everything, thanks to the competence of the majority of the members on this Forum, the disputes are kept to a minimum and all comes to rest by clearing up some misunderstandings. Unfortunately, on some Forums it looks different.

Thank you for your thoughts but I am even luckier then that as turkey season is in and I am in my camp chasing the old toms.

You’re a true inspiration. My father turns 93 years old this year and is still extremely passionate about hunting jack snipe in the local rice paddy fields.

In the past I have hunted Jack snipe in the black alder patches of Maine, N.H and Vt. Takes good reflexes and fast swing to wing shoot snipe.
Apologize to all for hijacking the thread
OP orginal. 577 vs600

I'd imagine those 600's sound noticeable when touched off?
erroneous question, but curious.

After I killed cape buffalo with my .577 NE, many of the old, standard concepts about it, like most of the statements above, became irrelevant to me. Many of the negative comments are around the recoil which in fact is not that bad in the field with a properly configured rifle. ( it is bad to shoot off of the bench.)

- The penetration of the .577NE for cape buffalo is absolutely ideal with proper bullets, either solid or softs.
- The amazing killing power is a huge asset when hunting an animal that kills people.
The only thing that is against the .577 NE, as far as I am concerned in my old age is the weight, 12-15 lbs. so I will get some help carrying it from time to time in the bush.

Wait I'm confused I thought all you needed was a properly scoped 375 ....
Good for you Brian

I have no idea why some people just want to argue especially with someone that has a wealth of hunting experience beyond what anyone of this generation could only dream of obtaining. When someone like Hunter-Habib speaks on a hunting situation or heavy caliber rifles I would never think to question his experience, but instead note his words as gospel.

splitting hairs. I can imagine the 577 would work remarkably.

I saw a guy shooting crocodile, prone 'c one.

If affordable .. go for it.

Nothing like a big double, not only do they smash big critters but just plain cool in every way.

"you like what you like" .. simply.

To answer the original question, yes, all things being equal, the larger rifles are more effective on big game. However, I would be remiss in also stating that they aren't meant for everyone. They were also not meant for general purpose rifles or for the casual sportsman to occasionally take a head of dangerous game. Leave that business to the 375s and 416s.

I've been privileged to have used or seen used just about everything that's available and the difference between the 450(.458) - 500(.510) crowd and in direct comparison to everything north of that is rather noticeable. Again, all things being equil.

Historically, the cordite loaded Kynoch ammunition never did the advertised velocities, usually well under. With modern rifles, shooting modern bullets, and getting around their prescribed 2050fs... it's no contest.

I love all big rifles, both bolt and double, but the ultra bores are simply in a different league. That being said, they are only as good as you can shoot them.

I spend a lot of time in the wild lands of Africa. In the early season when the grass is tall and green, when leaves are still on the trees, and the visibility is mostly measured in feet, you can smell the buffalo and elephant, you can hear them tearing away(hopefully) through the bush, and you walk into the spot where you can still feel the sticky air from their body heat. Spend much time in that country and you'll want the biggest rifle you can get your paws on. If you see me there, I'll have my .577 Nitro.

That is a great summation. I don’t have near the experience in the field but I have trained with a 500 jeffery and used on a double buff safari. IMO, once you get past the 40’s not everyone can handle the recoil and concussion of the true big bores. Stepping up and popping a few rounds at the range with a buddies rifle is one thing, but methodically working with, hand-loading, practicing, and becoming proficient with one is another. It’s not just a mental game, your body has to be able to take it, and sometime the effects are not immediate. All that being said when you put the big rifle up on sticks staring at a big ugly, it seems worth it

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary

Booked with Harold Grinde - Gana River - they sure kill some good ones - who'd you get set up with?
