I believe that is factually wrong. The .375 Flanged magnum will meet any DG requirement of which I am aware.

For Zimbabwe .375 flanged falls short by 100 joules based on factory ammo (300 grains @2,400 fps) for class A game (elephant, hippo, buffalo). That being said, I doubt anyone will have an issue or even check especially seeing that the OP is a Zimbabwe resident.

Yep. I actually had looked them up they fall short by about 500 joules. Interesting that Zimbabwe has both caliber AND energy regulations. Personally, I would think lions should also have been a class A rather than a class B with a 7mm as a caliber minimum. Soft tissue, but heavy bone.

It would not be my first choice for elephant, but I suspect a 300 gr Hydro in the ear will kill any Pachyderm currently in Africa.

I stand corrected. I thought its joules would not be acceptable. Seems it makes 300 more than required in zim.

You have the correct info however the foot pound calculator I used came up with 3,836 ft-lbs and that translates to 5,200 joules. Where did you come up with the 4,160 ft-lbs number?

Folks, these have been a frustrating few months, please bear with me relating the experience in build up to asking you for your valuable input to a decision I must make.
So I am in love with the Heym 89B as you probably gathered, functionality, aesthetics, all perfect. So I get in touch with the South African agent in January, yes he happens to have a 450/400 in stock! So I buy my air ticket and get the negative covid test, and if it fits me, it's a deal. Night before and the covid spikes hugely, our chairman (my brother) forbids all travel. So I inform the agent it is all off for now, and within a few days he lets me know the double is sold anyway.
Ok, so now we have a clean slate, and I start doing the usual vascillating, comparing of options and the pendulum swings to the 375 Flanged Magnum in the light framed 89b. It all seems so right, and I can apparently order it now and get down to Pretoria for a fitting later. The order is duly placed - and my bank corrupts my account in some internal changes and I can't access my funds for over three weeks. The day that that is finally resolved, my kids get into a bind buying their new house and the Heym fund has to urgently go to that noble cause. So I have to cancel again. I can only imagine how the Heym agent took this.
Now at last the path seems clear again, but that clean slate raises it's head once more - should I go for the 375 Flanged Mag in the light frame (3.6kg) or back to the 450/400 in the Africa frame (4.5kg)? Help me guys, after all this I am swimming.

I am not aware of any factory ammo that does 325 at 2,400 fps. Your post had 300 grain at 2,400 fps for .375 flanged. Also, Heym is either going to regulate that rifle for Hornady 300 grain or Norma 300 grain ammo both at 2,400 fps and 5,100 joules.

Help me Kevin...I thought the 450-400 can take even Elephant while the 375 cannot. Just curious as I want one DR for all DG

Hi Rare Breed, yes the 450/400 can take ele too, but it is billed as a buffalo expert. Since I will unlikely ever take an ele, my target is buffalo. So in truth the 450/400 and the 375FL can do that, but the 375FL has more reach out for PG. but I also have my 375H&H Ruger no1 for that.

You already have a .375 H&H and it will have more velocity than a .375 flanged. Based on your comments this is almost once in a lifetime purchase for an expensive double rifle. I'd go for the better tool for buffalo and that is imo the 450/400. Why compromise? Take the @Von Gruff knife instead of the Swiss Army

I was figuring it would be about on par with the 45-70.
Im not the worlds best shot by any means. But I can change brand and grains on my 500ne heym and not notice too much difference . Ive shot some different hand loads from others without any real noticeable difference also.

I'll be the contrarian. Do you want a purely dangerous game rifle to lug around or do you want a general purpose rifle that is a joy to carry as well as shoot? How many elephant do you intend to take? With a 270 or 300 gr A-Frame, your flanged will be as or more effective than any 9.3x62 or 74R and will kill any buffalo that ever walked. Moreover, it will be as accurate and useful on PG as far as you are willing and able to take a shot.

I suspect you have a lot more PG and the occasional buffalo in your future than elephant. For me, it would be no contest - the .375 flanged mag by a wide margin.

You assume correctly Red Leg. That is what swayed my original decision, and running the felt recoil calculator the 450/400 in the Africa frame hits 49ft lbs. the 375FL hits about 45, but in the Light frame it is 35. So any way you look at it the 375FL is the easier shooter.

Yes I have a 375 H&H Ruger No1 Fluff, and it will do everything, pretty much has. But it is uncomfortable to sleep with, I just Want a double.

To be honest I don't think you will feel the recoil much in the heat of the hunt. My elephant rifle according to the recoil calculator has 86 ft/lbs of recoil. I don't remember the effects of recoil at all while shooting at multiple elephants with it.

Now, during practice I shoot it off the sticks or off-hand not from a bench

I've obviously got confused, but how do come up with less recoil ina lighter frame?

Both calibers are great but there's also the old adage "better to have a bigger rifle and not need it, than need it and not have it"

Another solution could be to buy a Krieghoff Classic Big Five with two barrel sets, one in .375 Flanged and one in 450/400 or larger.

My opinion and vote (for what it’s worth with no experience) is for the 450-400 as you already have your 375 base covered with your No. 1 I believe? Since you’re local bringing two rifles if you wish wouldn’t be too much of a hassle I should think, and if you’re like me the possibility of simply adding an excellent kudu or whatever to your buffalo hunt if you happen upon one is out of the question financially so the 450-400 shouldn’t be a hindrance (as far as range capability goes) to the overall success of your hunt. But that’s just me

I could take two rifles, but somehow I think you get more immersed in it if you just take the favourite and use it for all. Its like taking two girlfriends to dinner, can only end in dilution - and a cat fight.

I understand, I love my double shotguns. This is first Africa hunt so PG only. It looks like everyone becomes a junkie for life after they go once so I am sure I will be hooked too. Let us know what you buy. You can’t go wrong.
