So where is all the help going to come from to put on a huge volunteer driven event?

And there's the rub. Undoubtedly there are DSC members in the Atlanta area who will volunteer to help, but I suspect that most of the help will need to be hired. Not a huge problem, as I'm sure there are several companies who specialize in providing that service in Atlanta now, but it has the potential to change (for lack of a better term) the "flavor" of the convention. Certainly 2025 will be a learning experience for all involved.

Might go to SCI in Nashville instead for 2025, but that would almost certainly involve an airplane ride. My ability to get away for that length of time in mid-winter is highly weather-dependent, which means that the final green-light doesn't occur until less than a week in advance.

I wish DSC luck in the new venue, and hope that they are able to broaden their pool of interested hunters and potential members. But I don't see myself attending for the next year at least.

It just got uglier.
TTHA and SCI announced a show for January 2025 at the venue DSC moved away from in Dallas. As bad as that looks, it is even worse than just the venue. The Dallas show is the exact dates as the DSC show in Atlanta as well.

I cannot imagine that is the main SCI show. If so, it makes no sense to me. Most of the regular SCI exhibitors also have a booth at DSC. And I know that SCI announced while we were in Nashville that they would be staying there for several more years scrapping Indy and also New Orleans I believe.

The DSC communication says the hall used to house the DSC convention will not be available. It says the convention center is getting torn down in phases and less space will be available so a show the size of DSC can’t take place there. It will be interesting to see the size of this Dallas SCI show and the vendors that show there because it would likely put them in bad standing with DSC.

TTHA typically draws a different crowd than the DSC and SCI shows, but presents a nice alternative for folks that aren’t going to make the trip to Atlanta for whatever reason… there’s always at least a handful of international vendors, and typically a good number of US and Canadian outfitters present as well as a good number of booths representing firearms, ammo, and gear retailers..

I know we’re not doing DSC in 2025… so we will almost certainly attend TTHA.. and will likely host another Bos en Dal party at the house for all the locals and anyone else from AH that comes into town, etc..

It’s not, it’s a SCI/TTHA show. And you are correct SCI is in Nashville until 2033 and scrapped Indy and NOLA. Too bad about NOLA.

And big discussion elsewhere over several DSC board member’s and President resigning. Will see what happens after several years in ATL.

Corey Mason, CEO of DSC sent out this email this evening to members about the conflict.

DSC Members,

With the recent announcement of a new outdoors-type event in Dallas in January 2025 that is on the same dates as the DSC Convention in Atlanta, we want to address a few of the more common questions that are being asked regarding this event. As this event is not affiliated in any way to DSC, we cannot speak to any aspect of the event.

Last year, when DSC was notified that the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center (KBHCC) was going to be torn down and rebuilt, we were informed they would work in phases, with the initial phase beginning in Quarter 3 of 2024. In that phase, access to Hall F via the spiral ramp and dock would be eliminated before our 2025 Convention. As the project continued, each subsequent construction phase would impact more and demolish more Halls and Lobbies, resulting in less space available each phase, along with the loss of the marshaling yard, parking, and sky bridge connecting KBHCC to the Omni. With a Convention the size of DSC's, the immediate loss of Hall F, move-in ramp access, marshalling yard, construction walls, loss of parking, disruption to utilities, etc. made it impossible to hold the DSC Convention at KBHCC. Further, the reduced space available for use during the initial phases of construction is less than half of what the DSC Convention occupies. Thus, much smaller events will be able to use the significantly reduced space for the next couple of years until the space is ultimately all under construction and rebuilt.

In a meeting last week with KBHCC leadership, they reiterated that the construction timeline has not changed, and the new facility is anticipated to be completed in Quarter 4 of 2028 and will be able to host events in early 2029. DSC has letters of agreement with the KBHCC for dates thereafter.

When DSC was informed of the demolition and rebuild of the Convention Center, we narrowed our search options to a strict window. Specifically, to show respect and sensitivity to other hunting organizations, we avoided cities where other organizations hold conventions and only considered dates that would not conflict with the other major hunting conventions in the US. Additionally, when planning our new Summer Expo that will be held in the Dallas area, we purposefully avoided dates of other outdoor shows that occur in late summer in Texas. We feel strongly that all hunting and conservation organizations should work collectively to support, defend, and protect sportsmen and our hunting heritage.

DSC looks forward to hosting an incredible, world-class Convention in Atlanta in January and Summer Expo at the Gaylord Texan Resort in July 2025, where we will again celebrate our important hunting and outdoor traditions, while raising monies for Conservation, Education and Advocacy.

I’m a proud member of both SCI and DSC, among others. I try to recruit other like minded persons to join any and all conservation and hunting organizations.

SCI is firing on all cylinders with their recent move to Nashville and a continued 10 year venue contract. Great show recently.

DSC has a tough act to follow. The limited exhibitors I speak with are not happy about the temporary “Atlanta” Safari Club. Time will tell…

Happy hunting, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

I agree Tom. I had stopped attending SCI as I don’t care for Vegas and preferred the overall atmosphere of the Dallas show. However, the SCI show in Nashville is a refreshing change and much closer to home.

I will not be going DSC. But will attend the TTHA. Keep me posted Dave. Will be there for another Bos en Dal party.

The change in location is a non issue to me but I already have my next safari booked so no reason to go to this one.

I will go as there are for more direct flights to Atlanta vs Dallas from my state. This was my first year at dsc and I’m actually upset I never made the trip before.

For the next five years I will be in fat city with DSC in Atlanta and SCI in Nashville. Atlanta is a easy 3.5 hour drive from home while Nashville is a 5 hour drive.

As we have just founded a new DSC chapter here in the Carolinas, I think having DSC in Atlanta will be a boon for us.

I got the same email referenced earlier from DSC CEO...feels like there is something moving behind the scenes...unrest? Where is the story about board members leaving? I've talked to a board member and shared the feedback I got from DSC members at DSC. I still have not met a member who liked the move or more importantly, the WAY it was done and shared after the fact. I coach Fortune 500 leaders professionally and it's all about the way you do things...especially in change management. I get that DSC had to change venues...it's the way they did it that bothers me and apparently many others agree. It will also take a monumental lift to generate the volunteer base in one year for Atlanta that DSC has worked on for years in Dallas.

I am five hours from Atlanta and Nashville. Will go to one, maybe both meetings. I have never been to either one so am looking forward to it.

I have been to some other shows as an exhibitor.

^^^ This ^^^

Every single person I’ve spoken to about the move (and it’s been many.. the group includes life members, outfitters, vendors, etc… the people that should really matter to the organization…) has expressed a high level of displeasure about how DSC went about making the decision and how it was messaged… frankly, they did a terrible job… and I would venture the organization will suffer some consequences if they don’t find a way to win some people back over…

I don’t think the ATL show will be a failure… but the truth is a huge portion of the organizations membership and revenue comes from a fairly tight orbital ring confined to Texas… if a significant portion of that core contingent remains dissatisfied with the way DSC manages itself and makes decisions, I’d suspect we’ll start to see SCI grow a good bit more in TX and DSC start to wither on the vine a bit…

TTHA moving its annual show from Ft Worth in August to the Dallas convention center in January on the exact same weekend DSC will be in Atlanta is not a coincidence… that is SCI making a bold move, fully aware that there are a sizable number of Texans… many of them DSC members.. that are not happy and and even larger group that won’t be going to Atlanta (for a variety of reasons)…

6 or 7 years ago when I went to my first TTHA show there were only maybe 5 or 6 African outfitters present and only one of them was an AH sponsor to my knowledge..

Last year I counted close to 20.. with a couple of AH sponsors present.. and probably another 20 international outfitters from countries outside of Africa…

I’m going to bet those numbers at least double if not triple in January 2025 and that TTHA specifically solicits a lot more international outfitters to join them (they’re in a much larger space now and know a large DSC contingent will be in town and available to attend)…

If DSC isn’t looking at this as a direct threat… and purposefully planning on making a move to counter it (figure out how to get their membership “happy” again)…they clearly aren’t paying attention…

I'm a couple of hours away from Atlanta and will be attending the DCS while it's here. Also made SCI this year since it was right up the road in Nashville. I've attended/worked SHOT where it's a known commodity where to stay/eat/get around and having hosted numerous conferences in a former job.......I understand the challenges of moving venues...... but I like the idea, as someone pointed out earlier, of moving the location around in order to make it regionally available for others to attend who might not have otherwise due to the distance. All in all, I think it's a good opportunity.
