Saw this online. Longview, Texas police officer hit a mountain lion with his patrol car, Dec 10, 2024. The officer knew exactly how to pose with the cat.

Waiting for the civil rights attorney to file a suit against the police for violating the cat's rights in 3, 2, 1........

Looks like a skinny cat. I had a chance to shoot a lion around Dumas, Texas years ago, I argued that it wasn’t legal for me to shoot one figuring I needed some type of permit. My friend and guide said I didn’t, we went round and round and finally about the time I believed him the cat yawned, sprayed a bush and wondered off.

They have been spotted in a bunch of counties in Texas. Saw one around Laredo years ago. Not considered a “game animal” in Texas so no permit needed other than a general hunting license.

Kelly finally convinced me it was totally legal, I should’ve trusted him and collected the Tom.

Saw it online so must be true of another cat hit outside Uvalde in the last few days weighing in at 210. Those cats in the hill country area have a lot of easy food and can pack on some weight. Never seen one in person but have seen tracks between Freer and Laredo as well as tracks SW of Sonora, Tx.

You NEED to take them out when you run across them--they will wipe out a lot of your largest bucks. The reason--while all the does flee, the big bucks will turn and try to fight, and they don't have a chance against a cougar. So big buck selective in a back door kind of way.

A buddy of mine that lives in Longview is reporting that it was shot just north of town and the police officer is just posing with it…

Not sure what actual ground truth is..

The article I read said the police car hit the mountain lion and then they shot it.

LONGVIEW, Texas — A Longview police officer struck a mountain lion with a patrol vehicle early on December 10, 2024, while patrolling the 3800 block of West Loop 281.

The animal was euthanized at the scene due to the severity of its injuries.

A Texas Parks & Wildlife biologist and a game warden were contacted following the incident. The game warden took possession of the mountain lion's carcass, according to a press release from the Longview Police Department.

Saw one here on our place about eight years ago. Our property is on the San Gabriel. A half grown quarter horse foal was killed by one six or seven years ago three or four miles down stream from this location. Young males work their way down the river systems out of the Hill Country looking for new territories to claim. There is a fairly stable population in West Texas.

Texas is the only state that has not protected them (cattle and horses still generate a lot of political power). There was a movement in 2022 to finally provide them some sort of management, but to date, the only regulations are against canned hunts and traps have to be checked regularly. :E Shrug:

I’m north of San Antonio and nothing surprises me anymore
We saw a mountain lion down by the Guadalupe river @ river bend subdivision , sheriff office had a BOLO on a black bear , I see dead porcupine on the road and sometimes around the house in town , coyotes too
My hunting buddy saw some monkeys south of San Antonio , people are now killing warthogs fairly regularly in dilly Texas

I had a mountain lion drag a doe off that I shot during muzzle loader season in southern Oklahoma 10+ years ago. The cat dragged that doe 100+ yds and ate both hindquarters off it.

On that same property we had Black bears and river otters on game cam.

Just 1.5 hour drive north of DFW airport

yep, otters were eating the catfish off my trotline on Pat Mayse lake outside Paris, Tx., just leaving the head or partial backbone of 3-5 lb fish. Otter also reside in parts of the Sabine River.
Almost ran over a lean, long tailed cougar on Whiskey Hill Rd, outside Axtell, Tx (between Waco and Corsicana) in the 1980s. Land owner who had been there since before available electricity said they occasionally came through the area, probably kicked out of the territory of older males and having to try and establish themselves in new territory, though never apparently sticking around long.
1970s a donkey was killed by a cougar near the lake at Hawkins, Tx., and was itself killed in the act. The picture was in a local paper. It too was young and smallish.

My uncle Hank with a otters he killed in his backyard I guess Forrest otters, black bears, mountain lions are making a comeback or are getting displaced by urban sprawl

Utah removed protection for cougars. Now they are the same as Texas, huntable with your general big game license.
They kill alot of big bucks because the bucks get Worn down during the rut and then the cats take them down in the snow .

They are legal 365 days in Nevada, but the outfitters only hunt in the winter ,usually when snow is on the ground, makes easier tracking for the hounds, My friend is an outfitter exclusively for Cat and only will take the males

We've gotten river otters on game cam in our little sandy-bottom creek in West Feliciana parish (just north of Baton Rouge). No idea why they'd be in the creek, nothing swimming in it but minnows, and not many of those. We have problems from time to time on that creek with beavers as well.

Cougars used to be fairly common around Houston. U of H chose that as their mascot for a pretty good reason.

It may not be in our lifetimes, but I'd bet money jaguars will once again roam Texas, at least along the border. There is no shortage of white tail, aoudad, axis, fallow, blackbuck, feral sheep, feral hogs, etc. I'd imagine even nilgai would be fair game for a big cat like that.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
