I think it's safe to say that many game animals in North America have fallen to Remington Core Lokts. I for one fall into that successful group. I took many deer in 1970's & 80's with them.

They were the king of Penn's woods for many decades!

Interestingly when in Elk camp about 10 years ago one of the guides claimed them as his favorite bullet to see a hunter show up with. He claimed they consistently got it done (in his observation).

To each their own....if it weren't for modern bullets, I'd go right back to them.

Love my 340. 160 grain to 275 grain bullets it gets it done. However if the 338 Ultra mag existed many moons ago I think I would have started with that 338. From that I understand it's less fickle and easier to get to shoot well.

I found my load for my 340, 225 grain Barnes TTSX at 3,000 fps. It's dropped every animal that I have shot with it and a few more after they borrowed it.

My nephew used it on a elk hunt when his rifle went on the frits. After he shot his elk with it he went out and bought one for himself.

Once you use a 340 it's hard to not use it for everything!

I've taken animals with 160's 185's 210's & 225's. I'd like to load up some 275 Swifts for Africa next.

I have a CZ550 .375. It stays home when I’m hunting here in the mountains. WAY too heavy. You’ll only hunt in the mountains ONCE carrying a heavy rifle when wearing a backpack.

This is an unorthodox question, and I am more curious rather than suggestive: has anyone successfully hunted elk at closer ranges with a double rifle?

This past November I used my Christensen Arms Ridgeline in 28 Nosler on a 6x6 elk in Idaho. Has a Huskemaw 5x25x50 Blue Diamond scope, shooting factory 160 grain Accubonds. Worked great. Previous rifle was a Browning A-bolt in 300WM with a Vortex Viper 5x25x50 scope, shooting 200 grain Nosler Partitions. Any of the 7mm or 30 caliber magnums will get it done on elk.

Seem to always be hunting elk in short range situation my go to elk rifle caliber since 1990 is a model 70 35 whelen AI, black stock,sworski glass 225 gr. bullets sub. minute past 200 yds. close to 3000 fps

+1 on short range situations. I’ve never shot one past 150 yards and don’t really want to if I can get closer. Just my preference.

I’m sure it’s possible but out west with the pressure they get it would be extremely hard! Even the muzzle loaders wear scopes. The range is typically longer than a doubles reach

I have worked my way into a couple small herds carrying my 9.3x74R DR, getting within 25-40 yards of several bedded cows, and backed out without ever having one look my way. That's a successful hunt.
I have yet to shoot an elk with said rifle yet as neither bunch had any headgear sadly.
