Ever Wonder Where The PH Short Shorts Style Came From?

USA = farm and ranch work in jeans and a t-shirt.
Africa = hunting in shorts

I’m always wearing jeans and a t-shirt when beekeeping, sawmill, chainsaws, tractor etc.
I prefer to hunt in shorts in Africa.

This was an interesting video.

I don’t get it…I wear shorts and flip flops or keens year round. You jokers wearing pants are missing out.
The only thing I'm missing out on by wearing pants is scratched up legs. My lifestyle doesn't allow the wearing of shorts. From a style point of view, western boots don't go good with shorts except on the ladies.

As a South African, my diff ratio does not work with trousers, I hate the damn things!

Shorts 364/365 days a year.

In the Bermudas they get to wear dress Bermuda shorts as well as casual. Sure would be comfortable in Texas summers, just sayin'.

My late father's cousin was in the Rhodesian SAS during the bush wars. He said it was either the heavy, long trousers they were issued with or the gym shorts. It was too warm for the long pants soo..

Many of the ex SF guys went back/on to work as Game Rangers and PHs

I worked for naby years as cattle rancher in Namibia, North Eastern Botswana and Southern Zambia. I currently spend half of my week in the Zambezi Valley. My cattle farming days are sadly behind me.

There are a few lessons one learns when you paid to work in the sun (and not nap under a tree during the hot ours)

1. Skin cancer is real.
2. I look 5-7 years older than what I am due to sun damage (in spite of braod rimmed hats, suncream etc)
3. The sun on bare skin saps the energy out of you.
4. I think a cool breeze on the skin is a illusion.
5. I venture into the sun with a broad rimmed hat, long sleeved shirt and trousers.

Although I'm a South African and grew up with short-shorts my first October in Botswana cured me of that. Most of my cattle farming friends also work with long trousers.

From long experience I know I can last longer and drink less water than most men. Perhaps it's because I'm a bit more hear adapted and mostly because I protect my body from direct contact with the sun?

Yes, but short shorts do not rub on the top of the thighs at every step which as the end of a long day contributes meaningfully to leg fatigue. Never mind when long shorts are wet and do not slide on the thighs...

The French Foreign Legion, whose men walk a lot in Africa, never abandoned their short shorts, and there is a good reason why...

I for sure keep mine :)

Not only the Legion, but all French soldiers in Africa and other countries with hot climates had such short pants. I was not by the French legion but by a paratrooper unit stationed in Djibouti. The short shorts were not allowed for parachute jumping, but otherwise we wore them in all occasions, even with the combat equipment. Either way, clothes don't protect against bullet or shrapnel injuries and flak jackets were not fashionable back then.

Agree with everything you said. Working in the oil field here in the US (I’m sure people do this elsewhere) it will be 105-110 Fahrenheit and the Mexicans/Latinos will have just about every square inch of their body covered. They’ve got it figured out.

In the US, basketball shorts, ca 1960, were short… PH length. Then 80s-90s trended to ankle length “prison/gangsta” style.

Also, WTH is the latest “statement” clothing trend around here, last 5 years or so, of wearing shorts and flip flops in below zero weather with big down coats and knit caps?? :)

I quit trying to figure it out long ago,

Here is a pair of my old “UDT’s” this is all we wore. They did help reduce chafing from sand and saltwater

And no I won’t pose them for you. Don’t PM me.
