Experience The Hunt With Jim Gibson From NEW ZEALAND SAFARIS

Varmint Hunting

From wallaby to rabbits, we have an abundance.

These introduced species compete with our livestock for a food source. They are listed as pests to our environment, hunting these small game animals is our part of game management in New Zealand.

full

In 1870, Captain Thomson brought over two female and one male red neck wallaby from Australia to our local Waimate district in the South Island.

varmint-detail.png

The lack of predators and abundance of food now sees huge populations spread throughout this area. Most of the small population established in Central South Island, near the town of Waimate, where it began to breed prolifically in the hill country. Wallabies can grow up to 1m tall and up to 25kg in weight.

The weather and feed conditions in New Zealand mean they can breed all year round and this has led to a population boom now estimated at 11 million. They are mainly found in mountain grass (tussock) areas but live anywhere they can find cover and food. More and more large numbers descend on to farm crops and devastate them overnight. They are primarily nocturnal but can be found out in the daytime in winter when overnight temperatures are very cold and they need to warm up in the shortened daily sun.

VARMINT HUNTING
...A Few Things To Know

This hunt should not be considered a high-volume hunt, but more an adventure for the hunter, and for someone seeking a totally unique experience. Coupled with a big game hunt, this can be an excellent add-on to a true New Zealand safari.

There is no hunting season on them. They can be hunted year round.

Wing Shooting

New Zealand has a total of 13 huntable species.

Daily bag limits are between 2 - 25 depending on the species.

New Zealand is a country full of scenic beauty and abundant wildlife – unencumbered by predator problems. The duck population has been allowed to flourish here, since the nests are not tormented by the predators you'll find in North America.

We have an excellent operation for those hunters who want to see a different shooting environment, and see birds available no place else on earth. Mallards were introduced to New Zealand before the turn of the 20th century, and have had phenomenal success there. We also have native species, the unique and beautifully painted paradise duck, about the size of a small snow goose, and the gray duck, which is similar to the mallard. We also hunt the black swan, another species introduced in New Zealand.

Our main season is the first weekend of May through to July with an early short season in March.

We also have a local pheasant season from April to August, as well as merrium turkey hunting. New Zealand Safaris has one of the highest populations of wild merrium turkeys on one of our properties that has an open season.

New Zealand Fly Fishing

The world's best fishing is right here in New Zealand.

Fly Fishing in New Zealand is known by anglers as the world`s best wild rainbow and brown trout fisheries, as well as chinook salmon.

The South Island of New Zealand is home to some of the purist glacier fed streams and lakes of gin-clear water.

These waters call to anglers from around the globe in search of true trophy fish. The average size of our trout is 3-5 pounds, with big trophies regularly going in excess of 10 pounds!

Options for fishing licences are 24hr or full season which can be purchased online, through your guide, or at a local hunting and fishing store. The central South Island fishing season opens on 1st October through to 30 April, with some other lakes and streams opening on the first Saturday of November.

In New Zealand there are 250 waters that remain open all year. The Mackenzie district in the central South Island holds a gem to anglers in the know; hydro canals. There are very big trout and salmon in the canals, some of which weigh over forty pounds! There are also very good numbers of large rainbow trout weighing between 15 and 20+ pounds with plenty of fish weighing around the 30-pound mark. You really have a chance to catch that world record trophy fish of a lifetime.

While we provide accommodations for fishing and hunting clients at All Seasons Lodge, we utilize the services of the best professional fishing guides in the South Island who are members of the New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association. This can be a great opportunity for hunters to combine a cast and blast vacation or just experience a world class angling adventure.

Congratulations. That was the most impressive "presentation" of an outfitters operation that I've seen on AH.

FAIRLIE, NEW ZEALAND
...A Few Things To Know

The pretty farming town of Fairlie marks the beginning of the Mackenzie Country. Just west of here, Burke Pass takes you into the high altitude, tussock-covered expanses that characterise the region.

While you're in town and looking for local non-hunting things to do, a visit to the Fairlie Heritage Museum is recommended. It houses one of the biggest vintage wagon and carriage collections in the country. You may like to follow this up with a carriage ride if you're traveling with a spouse or family around Fairlie township. At lunch time, the locals recommend you try a salmon and bacon pie at the award-winning Lieber Bakehouse.

Fairlie, New Zealand by New Zealand Safaris posted Feb 27, 2019 at 2:34 PM

In winter (June - September), Fairlie is a base for skiing at Mt Dobson (affectionately known as 'Dobo') and Roundhill.

During warmer months, the recently created Lake Opuha is popular for boating and fishing; you can also take a llama trek around the lake. Hiking, horse riding, mountain biking, trout fishing and farm tours are other popular activities.

The Raincliff Historic Reserve is the place to see Maori rock art, and famously scenic Lake Tekapo is just a 25 minute drive away.

Jim, it’s on my bucket list to return. My youngest granddaughter is becoming my hunting bud and I think she could be easily convinced to come with me.

Now my 5 year old boy wants to hunt a black bear, what is it with my kids how about we start on rabbits or wallabies!!

Very good presentation of information. Alot of great details here. Of everything presented the wing shooting really got me excited. Definitely need to make this hunt happen.
