Expert Advice???

Welcome to AH. It is good to see young people involved in hunting.
Search this site and any other for the word "Zim". Then see if you find any violence perpetuated against tourist hunters. You will not.

There have been farm seizures. Most were not violent but some were. Three nights ago a friend I have known for over 40 years dined with my wife and me at my house. She has lived in Zim since 1985. Her and her husband raised three children there. They also lost their farm in 2001. They now live in Harare and still believe Zim is the best place on earth to live.

Things constantly change in Africa. Read these sites. Attend DSC or SCI convention. Join DSC.

Read Ruark, Capstick, Hemingway, Taylor and others. There is nothing better than a proper African safari.
I read Capstick's 'Death in the Long Grass' 'Death in Silent Places' and other 'Deaths'.:) I've read John Andrew Hunter's 'Hunter' and John Henry Patterson's 'The Maneaters of Tsavo', I've only heard of Ernest Hemingway.:) Yes, my nephew said that there are like wars in Zim and people are getting shot, so just as long as it's all falsery. I was wondering-is Dallas Safari Club only in Texas? The only time I've ever met a PH was at an Arts Fest, the head of Bosbok Safaris had paintings of Africa there. Thanks for your concerns on getting me to the Dark Continent!!:D

With the possible execption of "The Green Hills of Africa", you may want to skip Hemingway for a while. It can be heavy going at times. The bible of Africana has to be James Mellons "AFRICAN HUNTER". Safari Press has reprinted it in soft cover. "African Hunter II" by Craig Boddington is also a must have book and is much more current and relevant than the first one.

I told Christian that I had hunted with Bosbok in 2007. Who did you meet from Bosbok? I had a very good time with Phil and Kate. Nice camp, ample game, good equipment. Great food! Have fun!

Wecome to the forum, Joseph, I hope your dreams will be fulfilled.

Hmmm... so I gues Hemingway has a lot of gore? I'll have to look for African Hunter on Amazon or such. Thank you!:) I met a guy-not sure if it was Phil or what-all I know is it was a guy.:)

Thank you, Nyati! I'm not really a newcomer, I've just vanished from the forums since '09.:) I am looking to go to Africa but you know, you never lose the dream but somehow you always lose the cash!:D

Joseph, Phil de Kock is around 55, tall (over 6 feet) and balding. Very nice guy.

As to Hemingway and gore? Well yes to some extent. No worse than many others. His work is of course fictional, even his African stories, which are based on his experiences there. It is said that even Ruarks "Horn of the Hunter" is at least partly fictional which matters not to most of us. I have read it at least 5 times and the Green Hills 3 times. Both are great reads. I read Ruark when I was about your age which is a looooong time ago!

Yeah, that's who I talked to-I think. Well you said to skip him for a little while, so I thought you meant it was violent, I've never read any of his books, I've just heard of him.:)

By heavy going I meant slow and ponderous at times.

Joseph, Refer to post # 24 please. I did say heavy going.

Joseph is indeed my uncle, but I don't ever remember saying that they kill christians in Zimbabwe. I did say that they do confiscate land and sometimes kill white ranchers. I don't beleive I ever said that they discriminate against christians, though I could be mistaken. I have talked to some guys on another forum and they said that there is certain areas in Zim that are far more dangerous than others, is this due too gangs or what?

BTW, I'm not saying that you lied Joseph, I'm just saying that either I was mistaken or you were.

Joe. You got it all wrong. They kill and eat guys named christian in zimbabwe..regrardless of color. Tell your nephew to stay away at all costs. Guys named Joe get off with a simple beating.

Rastaman...I'm still bloody laughing at your quote several days later....will stay with me a while. Hope Joe sees the well meant humor.

Yeah! That's hilarious!!=) Good joke! By the way, messmate, I do see the humor!:D

Oh, idk I think that's what I heard and misinterpreted it, could be wrong, though.:)

Joe, it is great to have a dream and goals at life, when I was at your age have the same dream to hunt Africa with my father and some years later it came true, keep your dream and for sure you will be hunting africa, Eastern cape its a great place for first timer.
great to know of young people dreaming with Africa

Thanks!:) Most kids grow up in cities and when they see a picture of a fine Wildebeest or Eland, they think it's some sort of alien creature because they haven't seen it in the local Zoo and have no interest about going outdoors. I think that having dreams about going to Africa is educational in such an aspect. You learn what the animals are, everything about them. You get to know your quarry. I'm just saying this because, besides Trigger Creep and his dad, there is no relation or friend that I know that even has remote interest in hunting. It just makes me sad.:(
