Favorite cocktails

Every trip to Africa while I am waiting at the airport to fly out I have a Bloody Mary! It became tradition about 10 years ago.

Rum and dr pepper sometimes
Usually it’s Tito & soda
Old fashioned when we go to Bobs steakhouse

French 75
1oz gin
1/2 oz lemon juice
Sugar cube or 1/2 oz simple syrup
Top off with Champagne

Rusty Nail
1 oz whisky
1 oz Drambuie
Twist of orange peel
Big ice cube
I prefer to use 15 y/o Glenfiddich and 15 y/o single malt Drambuie

Salud y Cheers

We’ve got a variation of the duck fart here on the east coast we call the black duck. For those of you unfamiliar with the duck fart it was made famous by the late captain phil Harris of deadliest catch fame, the original duck fart is a mixture of crown royal and baleys.

The black duck is mixed in a pint mason jar.
Fill jar 3/4 full of ice
Add 4 oz Kailua
Add 2 oz golden wedding whiskey
( Canadian 83 or black velvet work in a pinch )
Fill jar with chocolate milk and stir.

I’m not much for mixed drinks… I typically just do whiskey of some sort either neat or on the rocks..

But a black duck sounds delicious!

There’s one waiting here for you anytime you make it out this way

I normally like it straight

And I don’t know if this is a cocktail or not but there 2 I make every year

A mulberry drink I have my wife make mulberry syrup like making jelly about a quart of it about 1 lb of honey and a gallon of white rum what ever you like mix it together let it set to mix and I just pore it over ice
One of my buddy wife’s like it mixed with soda water

The other is a cherry bounce
I use Canadian whiskey but bourbon or Rey will work
About 2-3 lbs wild black cherrys 2 lbs honey
1 gallon of whiskey and about a cup of crown royal vanilla ( in place of vanilla extract)
Mix together let set a few months to let the flavor marry
It is also good to moisten the top of a fruit cake for Xmas

A old drink the juice of 1 key lime 1-2 oz Cain juice and 1 1/2-2 oz moon shine ( for those that don’t brake any laws I guess the store bought fake shine would work). That one been passed down the family since about 1823

I’ve had a few variations of a Whiskey Sour lately.

The Formula for a Perfect Whiskey Sour (Four Roses)

I eyeball everything and sometimes splash it with Club Soda - Makes it a John Collins (More or Less)
  • 2 ounces whiskey
  • 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 to 3/4 ounce simple syrup, to taste
  • Maraschino cherry (or lemon peel), garnish
As the name suggests, this cocktail is sour, thanks to fresh lemon juice. The fruit's sourness is balanced and complemented by the sweetness of whiskey and simple syrup, so it's not as tart as you might think. For this recipe, we suggest using 2 ounces of whiskey, 3/4 ounces of lemon juice, and 1/2 to 3/4 ounces of simple syrup. Try it with the ratio suggested in the recipe, give it a taste, and then adjust your next drink as needed.

Rye Manhattan

- 2 oz Rye Whiskey (Nothing fancy needed. Jim Beam will work)
- 1/2 oz Carpano Antica Vermouth (No substitute allowed!)
- Ice - (Must be frozen well below zero Fahrenheit)
- Orange peel (Size of your small finger)

Ice a shaker glass 1/2 to top
Twist orange peel over ice to express into ice
Pour whiskey
Pour Antica
Stir
Strain into chilled Martini glass
or
Pour into Rock glass with ice

Garnish with orange peel

Maybe add a nice cigar to the mix and you're all set! Enjoy!!
Is it still a Manhattan if you skip the bitters!?

It seems to me, Papa Hemingway talking about a "Green Isaac Special" a variation of Gin&Tonic (?) in Island in the Stream...but I can't find the line now...
Anyone remember it?

I had to look that one Up…..

  • 2 ounces London dry gin
  • 4 ounces unsweetened coconut water
  • 1 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
  • 3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Garnish: lime wedge or peel

Shake all ingredients well with ice, then transfer contents of shaker into a Collins glass, adding more ice as needed. Garnish with a lime wedge or peel.

"Thomas Hudson tasted, took a swallow and felt the cold that had the sharpness of the lime, the aromatic varnishy taste of the Angostura and the gin stiffening the lightness of the ice-cold coconut water."

I love a well crafted cocktail. Probably too much.

We’ve had threads on gin and tonic, whiskey appreciation, cocktails that remind you of Africa and so I propose you post up your favorite cocktail and how you make it.

I love the old tiki cocktails, as I am quite fond of rum, and one of my favorites is a not well known drink…..

The Vicious Virgin….(nothing virgin about this gal)

¾ oz fresh lime juice
1½ oz grapefruit juice
½ oz orgeat syrup or Homemade Orgeat Syrup
¼ oz orange liqueur
¾ oz light rum
¾ oz tequila

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Share your favorite…..
