I know there are several bow hunters here who have wanted to get their elephant with a bow. Sadly, it hasn't been allowed in South Africa, and Namibia for a long time and more recently Botswana and Zimbabwe took them off the list for bow hunters. Most recently, I heard Mozambique has also stopped allowing bow hunts on elephants. This leaves just Zambia and Tanzania as options, as well as Cameroon.

I am headed out to Zambia in July to finally get a chance to take an elephant with a bow. While there, I will also be going for hippo and croc, to bring me to 5/7 of the D7 with a bow. Time to build my draw weight back up as I have been running just 81 lbs on my heavy bow as of late. I should be able to get that to between 88 and 90 lbs, which is where it maxes out at.

My trip will be July 10-21, with 10 days hunting and 2 travel days. Looking for a tuskless elephant, non-exportable. That will keep the costs down.

If there are any other bow hunters looking for a tuskless non-exportable elephant, there is a second tag and room for one more in camp. I wouldn't mind the company from another bow hunter.

Croc with a bow...now that would be interesting to watch!

Thats a major challenge, good luck. Maybe take a rifle and have someone carry it for you in case you have to do follow up

Not taking a rifle. If I have to do a follow up with a rifle, it won't count. Only need for a rifle is just to stop a charge. This will be done with a bow only.

Good Luck on your Safari!

In all honesty I've never heard of someone shooting a Croc with a bow but I'm sure you have done all the research.

Well, I am hearing conflicting ideas. Some people say to hit them in the lungs with normal archery gear and force them to come up to prevent drowning. Others are saying to use bow fishing gear and get a floater on them. Will probably bring the bow fishing gear with me just in case. Of course, that is one more thing to buy...

I’ll be following this thread closely, Good luck on your adventure! When you get your arrows built, let us in on what the specs are on your shafts and broadhead.

I do not know if I recall it correctly but I thought Steve Kobrine talked about hitting them in the lungs with a bow.

Anyway good luck. Would be an amazing accomplishment.

Wish you the best of luck !

From what I´ve heard, bow fishing gear works well on crocs.

Late June to early July bow hunt elephant report and video? Heck yeah I’m looking forward to this.

Have a good Freind going in sep for leopard elephant with his longbow… Good luck hope you smack a good one

Sound's like you're going to have an amazing trip. I've looked at similar myself.

I'll be in Zambia similar dates this year. Who are you bow hunting with? Where are you flying into/out of? Might be able to grab a beer and toast your elephant hunt along the way. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you want.

Yes, Steve shot them in the lungs. That is heavily the way I am leaning towards. The main deal is you have to miss the heart or they might die before they get back out of the water and you can lose them.

Hunting with Steve Rufus at Shamwari Safaris. I don't have my flights booked yet, but probably will be flying Qatar Airways from LAX as I can make it with only 1 layover in Doha.

Are you flying into Lusaka or Livingstone? I’m debating the same thing

Qatar out of Houston or Dallas with a layover in Doha or taking the Delta flight and hopping AirLink at JNB.

Into Lusaka. Just looked at the flight. $1,385 round trip from LAX. Overnight each way in Doha. Fly out on July 8th, arriving the 10th. Return on the 21st. Might grab a steak in Doha with you if that works out.
