For Sale High Quality 9.3x64 Brenneke Safari Rifle

Here’s a rare gun with an excellent to exceptional bore.

The gun is a German Mauser made by ESHA in Germany. I believe it was made for Brenneke because it includes many of the features of the guns he spec’d. It also has British proof marks.

Approximately 26” barrels. About 14.5” length of pull. Side stalking safety. Cocking piece swing safety also. Nicely engraved. Germany claw mounts. 2.75x scope. Plum brown barrels. Excellent set trigger. Silky smooth

Shown in the sun because I was putting a bit of oil on it.

A great safari rifle in a reliable caliber 150-200fps faster than a 375HH and a bit flatter shooting.

$4250 in the lower 48.

One more addendum. This gun is very rare. The last one by this maker, similar grade, that went through the US auction house was in 22 hornet, not a safari grade caliber. That gun sold for over $5000 at Morphy’s.

Has the barrel been reblued? The purple color on the barrel does not match the open sights, bottom metal , bases or the receiver. I don’t see the blueing turned purple on very many vintage rifles.

It’s not purple, it’s plum brown. This is the Boss style finish used on best guns of that era. (Google plum brown finish) Not many people left that can do a plum finish.

Its not a defect, it’s a costly feature.

Looks to me as a very old attempt at a refresh many years ago, along with a stock sanding. Looks as though many areas the checkering is flattened out and about gone too.

This is a rifle which would envy nothing from the best of the best. In fact, it is one of the best rifles I have seen advertised for sale for a long, long time (British included) on this page. Matched to a great European caliber aswell!! Seeems to be in tip-top condition. Best of luck with the sale.

indeed. The checkering is flattened. It always was flattened. It has its original flat top checkering. If restored, you’d need to cut 60 degree bevel checkering so it would look the way you believe it should look.

Clearly this is not the rifle for you. I’d direct you to remington or weatherby for your modern shooting preferences.

I have a Kollmorgen Bear Cub 2.75x and it is a very good scope. I don't know date of Mfg of Rookhawk's but it was likely made in the 1950s prior to Kollmorgen selling the rights to Redfield. At the time they were among the best scopes made in America.

possibly, but E Schmidt & Habermann was the maker of virtually all of Brenneke’s guns and the examples I’ve seen featured ESHA labeled floorplates. Brenneke’ s name is present on the barrel. Nonetheless, either way it adds nothing to the value.

The original optic was replaced with the current Kollmorgan which is quite clear and useable. The original scope was a true straight tube without bell nor windage turret. Probably a 1920s Zeiss.
