Gear you couldn’t hunt without

I do not hunt for measurements so no need for a tape measure.

Fair enough, each to their own. I only measure and score heads that have been cleaned by the owner (so not much point trying to score a head in the bush) and ... I understand that at least one game scoring organization requires trophy heads to be measured after a minimum number of days from the time when the trophy is taken.

Binos, ammo, antiseptic wipes, chapstick

Depending on circumstances I may leave my cruiser without a rifle, but never without my ash bag. Ele & Buff quite often take offense to the smell of humans and you are not allowed to kill every ele & Buff that does take offense.

ok y'all got me. What is an ash bag ?? I googled and found this.. .. awful stylist for the African bush :ROFLMAO:

ZG47---I agree. What I meant is I do not carry it in the field while hunting.
Yes I do have my African stuff measured when they get to the states and are ready for mounting by a SCI Official Measurer. That is ones he thinks will do well in the books. I did shot a Black Bear 35+ years ago and now wish I had measured it them since it scored well into the B&C books. However it is not as important as the fact it has a great thick hide and looks good on my wall which it takes up one whole wall. He was a very large and old(15.5 years old) boar that we hunted for 3 years before getting.

This may seem trivial but I like my high density foam seat that has a belt. I wear it even when stalking as it makes for a fast way to sit and be dry and comfortable. This has helped greatly from sitting in Pennsylvania snow/rain to Colorado cactus. Last year I dropped quickly behind sage in Colorado when stalking mule deer and sat on a pretty big cactus. I would have been plucking thorns from my backside for hours if not for my foam seat.

Lee M--- but don't the thorns work there way thru the foam later. Other than that you sound like you have a good idea. Even if you need to replace it after a hunt or 2.

It is an actual bag of ash to see where the wind is coming from.

That's what I figured it was but I didn't know the small particles that emitted from the sock when shaken were ashes. I thought it was sand. I have a bottle of some type powder that squirts in the air for this task.

When I first read this, I thought maybe the "ash bag" was used as a cover or scent eliminating device.

If you have to ask don't hunt DG.

So the ash bag is more important than your rifle ? I would have never considered leaving the vehicle in an area that holds dangerous game with only a lose sock :p

Toilet Paper

When you get to my age it's Toilet paper (or baby wipes) and lots of Advil..

Either made from cheese cloth, cotton or even the old tobacco bags with a string to close the top.

Each morning filled with the fine white ash from the previous evenings campfire. An invaluable tool when hunting and moving around especially DG.

It indicates what the wind is doing and in which direction it is blowing. Wind direction is everything and probably the most important factor to take in to consideration when hunting. There is always movement of air even if you can't see or feel it. The slightest movement of air and your adversary will lift tail and you'll have to start all over again. In the case of elephant(especially cows) they may come in your direction with malicious intent.

I never leave my vehicle in elephant country without my 500 Jeff, a checking some tracks at the waterhole turns into a elephant stand-off very quickly.

It’s 2”thick and high density. Mostly prickly pear type cactus in Colorado, so no issues.

I saw you were looking for some Swift A-Frames for your 9.3. I just bought a bulk supply of them in the 285g. version. If Toby's are gone, I could let 100 go for $200 shipped you are interested.
Thanks,
Gary
