I'm going to SA in September and will be using the PH'S rifles and ammo. I've heard that ammo can be difficult to get there, so I'm wanting to bring a couple boxes of ammo to help replenish what I use. Some say that I can, others say no ammo alone, but only with a firearm. Any info on that?

You can't bring in ammo unless you have a rifle to use it in. No rifle, no ammo.

Ok. Thank you. How's life in Gypsum? We deer/elk hunted up Coffee Pot road for years.

I believe you are limited to 200 rounds per rifle which must also be in possession. I had the same thought last November. You can take up to the full amount and you don’t have to bring it back FYI.

Spring is hitting full force.

I haven't been up to Coffee Pot for a few years. I need to get up there and do some fishing.

Did you hear about the bus that got stuck up there after they tore the oil pan out? This was a few years ago after Glenwood Canyon was shut down due to landslides that covered I-70

Unless you’re taking small caliber stuff, the airline weight limit will get you way before 200 rounds. And technically saying “you don’t have to bring it back” isn’t quite correct. You can’t export ammunition, you can only temporarily export it. Now if you use it all up, then there’s nothing to bring back.

Is that where you tell the guy at the gate…..Sorry had a fire sale :ROFLMAO:

;)

Is your PH telling you ammo can be difficult to come by? Usually no problem on ammo in South Africa.

I just completed my paperwork for the an upcoming July hunt. Needed to list the exact number of rounds I planned to import and it had to correspond to the weapon I am bringing. And what I just learned--which is really annoying about South Africa--is that one cannot bring more than one of the same caliber. So my plan to bring two 375 H&H rifles is not going to happen. I didn't have this issue with Namibia which seems far more lenient to visiting hunters. Just fyi. But it's odd that your PH is saying ammo is hard to come by. South Africa produces Rhino ammunition which would be great to bring BACK with you after a visit there!

Guys, he didnt write that the PH said this..

No need to bring ammo, they have ammo in the shops and you will pay for what you use.

You might be able to bring two rifles of the same caliber or calibre..........

It is often quoted that you can't and I've never tried to, but according to the SAPS website, it is possible.

An application for more than one firearm of the same calibre

The Registrar may in good cause shown, issue a permit in respect of more than one firearm per calibre to a person who will be using the firearms for the under mentioned purpose:

to a foreign visitor for the purpose of hunting

to a foreign visitor to display the firearm and ammunition at a trade show or collectors show or to display firearms or ammunition at a sport of hunting trade show.

To a foreign visitor to participate in a competitive sport shooting event organised by recognised business, hunting, sport-shooting or collectors organisation.
