Ghost Ring sight for small Double Rifle

Hello All
I am the proud owner of a 300 Sherwood double, it has some minor issues that I am slowly working through, the problem is I cant see the sights, I don't want to fit a scope, the only other thing I came up with is a ghost ring, the problem with that idea is I would like to fit something period, can anybody point me towards a maker or a sight that may sit well on the rifle.

What a cool little double! You should be a proud owner indeed. Make a left right on charging European hare or dodging rooks! I have a couple of Rook singles (38 long colt & 44 WCF original calibers) with which I occasionally terrorize the local armadillos.

This won't be a particularly helpful answer, but period peeps were typically inlaid on a pivot or hinge into the metal behind the top lever. The workmanship was so fine that they are almost invisible until flipped into place. The Germans were the real experts at this work. Traditional ones had very fine holes to use as a true peep. However, they can be very easily opened a bit to act as what we call a "ghost ring". I can not imagine who could do that sort of work today, and it would likely run more than the value of the rifle. I do not know the width of your rib, but it might be possible to adapt a peep designed for a rail to reach far enough to securely hold on the rib of your double. Recoil wouldn't be an issue and you would be doing nothing which would change the period correctness of the piece. Assuming you could find the gunsmith, it also would be a relatively inexpensive solution.

Im a huge fan of Trijicon RMR sights (although admittedly I had trouble getting one to work on my 470 Merkel).

Maybe this?

I have the old age disease and can't use open sights but do just fine with the ghost rings on my 590A1. Something about the aperature effect that sharpens vision.

Hello io mskp,

One of my doubles is a German Stenda Werke in 8x57 cal from about 1913. It has a ghost ring rear site. The site is vertically adjustable via a pivot pin in the site, and windage adjustable via the mounting dovetail. As you can see by the target, it works well with my 65 year old eyes.

Stunning indeed. The built in sights are very attractive and show some of the planning, design, and craftsmanship that went in to the creation of your double.

Though not built in, you may want to look at adapting this Talley "add on" peep sight as seen on the quick detach grooves in the rear rib of one of my doubles:

The peep does unscrew from the base if that gives you any ideas.

Also, there are a variety of peep and ghost ring barrel sights that are designed to replace or be added to the gun barrel sights . I recommend you do some Internet searches on this and see the wide variety of available sights.

I have this style of Talley ghost ring on a No1 in 9.3x62. It shoots exceptionally well with this sight.

I hear Skinner has done adaptations for people, if a standard model doesn't quite work. I recall seeing some on a "scout rifle" group on facebook.

On my DR the peep looks through the standing leaf of the express sight, so if the rifle is well regulated and the shooter sees the target/game, he can hit it.

Also, on the Talley, the peep part of the sight can screw out of its threaded holder and you have a ghost ring!
Fortunately my eyes are still capable of using the smaller diameter of the screw in ring.
The Talley peep did not come with my rifle and so I ordered it to give it a try on the grooves where my Talley QD scope mounts fit. My first shot from the bench was a bulls eye at 100 yards! The Talley peep now has its own place in the rifle case.

Is it a Simson, a Sauer, Merkel ???

Sorry, I was wrong on my earlier post, the ghost ring on my No1 is NECG, the Talley is on a M70 in 7x57, the island mounted weaver ghost ring is on a M70 in .375. They all work well.

Doesnt the standing leaf interfere with aiming through the peep?

Not at all.
When using an aperture rear sight, the eye focuses on the target and front sight.
Since the line of sight is through the V notch in the standing leaf, the leaf is not seen.
