1. A class/license like what one would have for vehicles

2. An extensive psychological evaluation to make sure you're not cocoa bananas

3. Keeping a check on gun owners in-case they go batty.

4. Promoting general common sense and punishing bad behavior like what they have with driving.

And finally, you can't just be a nice guy, you also have to be RESPONSIBLE with these things that can kill with the pull of a trigger. As one wouldn't try to jump a gorge in their old clunker, one shouldn't reenact scenes from Westerns and action movies (most of which use trained professionals). And of course, we should also be investing in mental health care more if we're to avoid more shooting. This isn't perfect but what is?

I don't know where you are from or anything about you. But tell me this. Which other of our US Constitutional rights do you think we as citizens should have to jump thru all these hoops you mention, in order to exercise those rights?

Well maybe if we didn't have a million shootings every year, maybe we wouldn't have to do this shit. IMO, you can't just give anyone access to an assault rifle or a rocket launcher. I get why the 2nd amendment is in place but sometimes you have to change the constitution to be with the times (18th amendment). I'm sorry if I sound like a hippy or an idealist but I'm just a concerned citizen throwing ideas into a hat.

I'm not sure when gun ownership became a priviledge to be given or taken instead of a constitutional right. History has shown that even without guns, murders and other crimes still happen. Remember Cain and Able? I know has been said by many other people as well, but mankind kills mankind, not the weapon.

I will never give up my RIGHT to own and carry a gun. Every responsible American who cares about their life and the lives of others should carry a gun every day. Time to stop listening to the liberal media and do some fuc*ing research (it really isn't that hard to learn,,, if one is willing). Below I have provided some links to none other, wait for it,,,,,,,,,, our US FBI statistics. They show violent crime rates (past and present)... Murder rates (past and present). The last shows the amount of legal, hold on let me capitalize that for you LEGAL gun owners here in America. Read the damn things yourself tigris115. The one I want to capitalize on, is the last, the NCIC check, if you read it you will find that in the last decade there have been over 100 million NCIC checks for firearms purchases (Many of which were mine). That is 100 MILLION. Because of the rules and requirements put in place since the first NCIC check, there have been over 700,00 denials. Got that denials, people who cannot legally obtain or be in possession of a firearm!!! So the check works. Criminals will always find a way though, and the guns they use are rarely purchased legally, like it or not. Do the math, gun ownership up, violent crime down...

With the other requirements you are suggesting, I sit here pissed and laughing at the same time. You, YOU, want to let this administration decide who is mentally fit to LEGALLY own a firearm? Sorry chief I am not willing to do that. The second amendment that you are referring to was put in place to protect us from a tyranny in government. Same as article V, in which the states can override any unlawful and unconstitutional ruling passed down from the 3 branches of government, (which is a completely different rant).

Where did you come up with MILLIONS of shooting? Guessing a number you pulled out of your a$$. Please share the link that gave you this information.

And finally,,,,, you DO have to have a licence to obtain a functional "Assault rifle".... Which I am guessing that you are referring to the civilian versions of the Ak-47 and the AR-15 (NOT assault rifles) and everything in between. I am right aren't I? You are foolish to believe that the majority of Law Abiding Citizens are out there are buying this style rifle to commit a bunch of horrible crimes. Most do it for protection and plinking, some do it for hunting, some do just because it pisses people like you off. Personally, I love the dang things.

While you are on the FBI site, check out how many have died at the hands of a drunk driver. Look how many have died at the hands of a doctor. Look how many have died from claw hammers, drowning in 5 gallon buckets, etc, etc... While on the web you should also check out Eurostat violent crime statistics, just to give you perspective on the situation, YES, they have lower crimes with firearms but, look at the violent crime rates.... Wish I had the link to northern Africa's/middle east crime rates, sure that would make you quit bitc*ing about the guns I can legally obtain.

We know that Wayne. Like I said I don't know anything about our young friend except his profile says he is 18. I assume he is from the US, but I don't know that. How other countries deal with this question is up to them and their govt. Most of us here feel pretty strongly about this and respond with some 'enthusiasm' to patently foolish statements such as posted by the youngster above. Its not meant as a criticism of other countries gun laws or govts.

tigris115, my young friend, what you have here is an opportunity. Based upon your response above I'm not optimistic that you will take advantage of it, but I hope you prove me wrong.
The opportunity to become better educated and more knowledgeable goes right to the core of what AH is all about. Doesn't matter what the topic, there are a bunch of really bright people here from all over the world with a wealth of knowledge and life experience that we all benefit from. When you make statements that you certainly should know, even at 18, are bound to be controversial and then pack up your toys and go home when the other kids ruin your sandcastle, you demonstrate a lack of maturity and an unwillingness to stand by your convictions and defend your position.
Here's my suggestion to you; take advantage of the links 35bore has provided above. Look at crime stats from places like Chicago, Detroit, D.C., New York, L.A., etc. that have the strictest gun control laws in the USA. Gun control is obviously working in those cities, right? Yeah, we just need more of that with psych evals thrown in!
By the way, where are you from anyway? Why not let us all know? Not asking for anything more than a country.
Also, do yourself a favor and study some world history. Gun control is nothing new. The operative word is CONTROL.

To be completely candid I am very skeptical of you and your motives. I say that respectfully as it seems clear that all are welcome here as long as the standards of decorum are adhered to, but your posts, this one and others, don't ring true.
Stand by your positions, man. Educate us. Tell is why the wisdom you have provided above is so enlightened and why we're so disillusioned. Hell, maybe you'll convince me and 35bore and sestoppelman of the error in our ways and induce us to jump on the liberal socialist band wagon! It could happen!
