I've had great luck for so many years until recently. One of my favorite rifles is a .22 Kimber Super America. It was getting a little tune up from my gunsmith and this is what happened in Fed Ex transit back to my local FFL. We have been talking to them for 2 months now on an insurance claim for it with next to no responses from them. We are going to get it fixed by a stock restoration expert but talk about feeling sick to your stomach!

If you ship enough guns, eventually something will happen and my luck ran out.

Holy crap, how hard do they have to slam the shipping box or drop something really heavy on it to cause a break like that!!

Yea and believe it or not, the box was not damaged. Makes you go hmm...

You’ve had some rough luck lately. Sorry to hear about this. Shipping companies insurance is a scam.

What was the other thing? I've somehow blocked it from my limited memory bank.

That is impossible. Bloody criminals!
Hope you get it resolved to your satisfaction.

Oooooof. I absolutely hate shipping nice guns. Obviously, in today’s world it is unavoidable at times to get what you want, but still gives me angina. I’ve had a difficult time selling some nice guns in the past because I try to limit them to local buyers only. Good luck on getting everything resolved!

Truthfully, I've probably been lucky to never have one lost in shipping and no major shipping damage until now. I did have a scope mount broken on a Sharps rifle but that was fixable. Of course it happens to a favorite personal gun. This was the gun I practiced with on shooting sticks the most.

I have lost 3 guns this way. Repaired eventually but makes you wonder….. I hope the metal is ok

I cannot emphasize 3rd party insurance when shipping nice firearms. I have had it save my butt on two of those occasions.

My gunsmith friend has some connections to Shiloh Sharps and they said this happens to some of their customer shipments...broken stocks, etc. Now that would suck after waiting 3 years!

And you had good experiences in collecting damages in the claim? I don't know anyone who has had a good experience with firearms insurance claims. You aren't really treated like a customer who paid for a service.

Fed Ex seems to not be replying to our emails, shuffling our calls around, and generally being unresponsive for 2 months now. I just want my gunsmith friend to get some kind of reimbursement for his insurance claim since he is going to cover my damages. He was literally sick when I sent him photos of the damage.

That is weird. Makes me wonder if it wasn't put in the box that way. I saw a birdseye maple stock snap in two exactly that same place when the gunsmith finishing the project simply dropped the gun. As I recall he was building a 240 Gibbs. He pinned the wrist together and client was okay with that. Birdseye and fiddleback are essentially defective grain wood. It's what gives the stuff its character.

FedEx is worst to get a claim with. I (we) quit using them after claim was denied.
There reason was. Even tho you are a gunshop, you are not licensed with proper shipping certification to ship firearms thru us. UPS has been ok on shipping. Usually little more in cost but they have paid on two claims very fast and no real hassle.

Sorry to see a nice rifle like that. Had that happen with FedEx also. Box showed no damage. Gunstock cracked in half.

I had a similar mishap some years ago Green Chile  In my case, on a Vancouver, Canada to Phoenix. AZ flight, with a fully bespoke Griffin & Howe rifle .340 Wby on a ZKK 602 action with all the bells and whistle (claw mounts, express sights on quarter rib, etc. etc.).

For what it is worth, the airline laughed at it, what with the Warsaw Convention and subsequent Montreal Convention that limit their liability for international flights to a couple hundred dollars per kilo.

The Warsaw Convention / Montreal Convention do not apply here, because, unless I am confused, this was not an international shipment. But even though Fed Ex is liable, their obvious defense will likely be to claim that the stock was broken before shipping, because the box was not damaged.

FYI, a friend suggested that I submit a claim to my home umbrella insurance (Farmers in those days). I would never have thought of it. To my amazement, they asked for a quote. I had Griffin & Howe submit one, and Farmers paid. And it was not cheap either...

In this event, there was obviously an external mechanical force (forklift truck?) at play.....................

More relevant to your issue, I also saw with my own eyes a stock break in the most unexpected circumstances. Actually, I am the one who broke it. It was a Sauer 90 Luxus rifle. A sharp wrap on the barrel to dislodge a twig fallen into the barrel during a hunt obviously transmitted to the stock exactly the wrong vibration amplitude at the wrong frequency, and it snapped at the wrist just like yours. I was speechless...

There is credibility to this. To this day, European countries forbid marching troops to cross bridges in parade steps. This is because in the 1900's a bridge designed to carry heavy lorries collapsed to the light weight but perfectly synchronized vibration amplitude and frequency of a regiment marching across the bridge . True story !!!

Sorry about this my friend :(

I feel your pain, I’ve been through this with UPS & FedEx; I had to get a quote for replacement and submit it.

Then just like you’ve experienced they duck and dodge everything; it got so bad that I threatened to file larceny charges on the UPS agent and suddenly a check appeared.

Good luck with fed ex. I shipped a rifle (Remington mountain rifle) from Texas to Washington last fall. We packed the rifle in a case, then into a cardboard box with extra padding. Box arrives late (paid $112 to ship this thing) with tire tracks on it. Guy pulls the case out, it’s crushed to the point it won’t stay shut. Eyepiece of the scope is bent down so you can’t pull the bolt back. Rifle was otherwise fine. We filed a claim, nothing. Luckily the scope was replaced under warranty. From now on I’ll only ship in a pelican case or something similar, and will never use fed ex again. Still sour about that.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
