I have a commercial trapline in Alaska. I've had multiple occurrences where a wolf on a long drag was unapproachable for a dispatch pole. I can tell you that rimfires (17s/22s) are insufficient, as we've rarely had a single round put one down, even when placed correctly. They do not have thick hides comparatively, but they are exceedingly tough. This is while having the luxury of having them pinned down close, and plenty of time for them to expire. The last time this happened was yesterday, and I still had a "dead one" give me a thrill 30 minutes later. I've had enough, I'm going to buy a 327 and load it with 32s. Even then, I'll still never walk away without a spare locked snare around its neck.
