Hello everyone!

Joined the forum awhile ago but this is my first post. My dad has always dreamed of going to Africa to hunt Cape Buffalo, and now that I am out of school and can pay my way we are finally going in 2026.

We went to the 2025 DSC show in Atlanta, and WOW what a lot to take in. After the first day of talking to literally every vendor that offered a Buffalo hunt, I got a plan together to focus on vendors that could offer us what we wanted.

Growing up in Idaho, I have chased free ranged game my entire life and quickly realized that a private fenced reserve was not the Safari adventure we were looking for. We started talking those who offered free range Buffalo hunts in South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. We now have a bunch of quotes in hand and brochures and are getting down to finalizing our plan

Since my mother and girlfriend are likely to go with us, we think a trip to South Africa is our best bet. We will save Mozambique for our next trip . We have narrowed it down to four different Safaris for our trip, all of which offer hunts on the greater Kruger with an open border. All have excellent references and are similar in pricing (+/-$4000) for a similar experience. What advice would you offer to help select the final company you would go on your safari with?

Primary Specie: Cape Buffalo
Ideal Additional Plans Game: Eland, Impala, Gemsbok, Kudu, Warthog, Wildebeest, Zebra

Rifles for our Hunt:
Dangerous Game - CZ Safari in 458 Lott with Leupold 1.5-4 & Ruger M77 375 H&H with a leupold 4-12.
Plainsgame: Winchester M70 300 Weatherby Mag with a Leupold 4.5-14 & Winchester M70 270 Win with Leupold 4-12.

I've been looking at Bos and Dal, Zander Bierman Safaris, and Thorn Mountain Safaris but not much info for references. I've also spoken with Bushman's Quiver- several friends have very positive experiences with them. We just made arrangement for 40th anniversary trip to Italy, so 2025 travel budget getting stressed a bit. I may have to wait until 2026 rather than go on a penny pinch trip in 2025.

Hello, there are many good outfitters on this forum that can advise and help with all you need for your hunt. Good luck and enjoy... im sure it wont be your last hunting safari to Africa either, the bug will bite

This forum is full of advice, but it is hard to digest everything in short time: but generally, after you made your due diligence and have reduced the list to chosen few - make phone call to each of them, and follow your gut feeling. Communication is the essence to success, and if you have positive communication with the outfitter from the start, most likely it will be good to go.

In my opinion, hunting safari always has a degree of risk something not going as per plan, but South Africa is well beaten path, outfitters are experienced, and chances to have a rewarding safari experience in South Africa is 99.5%.
