How about Johan Fanzoi double rifles

Ferlach is located in a region of Europe with a rich hunting tradition. For hunting in the Alpine region and surrounding areas you don't need rifles of bigger calibers. The rifles manufactured there are accordingly this situation. Hunting in Africa was not an issue for a long time in Ferlach. Things were different in Suhl and in Germany in general, especially because of the Mauser action that was needed by some foreign gunmakers and therefore the contact with hunting worldwide, especially the dangerous game hunting in Africa and India.

The lines regarding rifles manufacturing and cartridge designing were already established before the First World War in both empire. Germany and Austria-Hungary were two very different empires. This was also reflected in the hunting traditions and the rifles used. Franz Joseph I. and Wilhelm II. were both enthusiastic hunters, but they practiced them in very different ways.

That was just a small contribution to history. Everything is becoming globalized nowadays and Ferlach also wants to be active on the international market, but traditions always shape the very old gunmakers companies.

Johann Fanzoj is just one of the builders in Ferlach, Austria. There are a number of them. Ferlach is probably the last bastion of small custom gun builders in the world...old time craftsmen turning out high-quality and sometimes quite ornate firearms....more like gun-art. I've had several from Joseph Just, Franz Sodia, Joseph Winkler, Borovnik, and perhaps one or two more. They're sometimes elaborate to the point of being gaudy by American standards, but best quality, for sure.

A friend of mine shot three buffaloes with a Fanzoj double, and had no complains with it.

But not to my taste, I prefer more understated aesthetics.

Was in Ferlach in November of last year.

Had a down day on Sunday and sadly the museum was closed. I'll be back there in September and November to hunt again. Should be good, I'll make it there on a weekday. I don't know if I will visit any gunmakers or not. Probably for the same reason I don't hang out in Lamborghini dealerships. Never going to buy one, they are interesting to look for sure.

Johan Fanzoi is very interesting so is Waffen Schierring.

The little brown sign says Welcome to the Gunmaker City, for those that can't read Textur in German.

For those wondering about Ferlach, it's kind of a dirty little factory town. I wouldn't live there. Was a big disappointment.

When I walked all over it, I thought it was very clean and well kept.
I know of a Fanjoy 375 double that will group 3/4" at 100yds. It is an O/U however.

I know of one available for about $20k
It’s a Joseph Winkler from an estate sale.

I visited Ferlach in 2017, and met Patrick Fanzoi. Workmanship and quality is absolutely superb. To say that Fanzoi is not utilitarian, or too Teutonic or whatever is not correct.
Patrick Fanzoi made it extremely clear to me, that Fanzoi will make whatever you want. If you want plain receiver and nice but understated wood, then that is what you will get.
Same with stock dimensions and style. They can and will do anything that the customer requires.
I spent a morning with Patrick and he is a really great guy. Reach out to him and I am sure he will accommodate you.
These are a couple of pictures from the Fanzoi gun room.

I kind of feel like these guys are getting a bad deal and I’m talking about all of the makers in Austria and Germany at this level. With the Russian oligarchs not able to blow cash like they were before I think this is kind of an issue for them. I know they go to the Saudi Arabian show and the Dubai show and there’s quite a market there for guns like this and even more esoteric guns designed to look like old Arabian hunting scenes.

I don’t remember in sitting in my car. I’m not going to look it up. There are about 15 or 20 in the valley there. Some are self-made men and have started their own factories like Schiering and Hofer. Most of the rest are old names. Most of the people working in the trade are not Austrian or German most of them are from Eastern Europe.

There are also another 20 makers or more that are not in Ferlach some are in Austria somewhere in Germany, a few or in Switzerland

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
