Hyena?

Thanks folks. Seems to be a lot of folk that find it an exciting hunt and worthwhile. Will consider it for sure depending on cost of ‘tag’ and my own funds,(depending on how the week is progressing with regards to the plains game etc)

I take it TOPS are pretty straightforward with regards to export ? I was hoping for a black wildebeest anyway. I’m planning to dip and pack and I’ve heard CITES takes about 3 months to leave? Whereas the standard stuff is pretty quick.

With ongoing import ban chat every 6 months I’m keen to get stuff back asap - ridiculous but just the way it is.
Some people call hyena "the poor man's leopard."

Immaculate. Did you have cleaned in Africa or dip and packed mounted at home taxidermist?

Is that really next to a Griz? Looks so big!

Dip and pack, my taxidermist did the mount.

To be honest, it probably comes with a lot less judgment from the family as well!

Certainly calling them in sounds exciting. A little like fox control in the uk

Thanks! I was tempted to have dipped and packed and could even do the skulls myself,(do a lot of deer anyway). But I got told that they have to boil the stuff so much you may as well get it finished over there.

That been said, would be really disappointed if it was broken bones, varnished or painted so would almost prefer to do it at ‘home’

I would seriously rethink this. Although the chance is small, there is no antidote to rabies. If you contract it, its pretty much a one way ticket.
Second that, been quite a few rabies outbreaks in SA recently. Even reports of infected cape fur seals attacking surfers off Cape Town.

A very worthy quarry is the Stripped Hyena. Reclusive and nocternal, yet only legal to hunt during daylight hours. It is a loner and smart. Takes planning and strategy . A real prize trophy.

Think it’s a spotted but don’t quote me on that..

I love hyena hunting at night. Building a blind, calling, when they start calling back. I just wish I didn’t miss one! Ha

Folks, I’m intrigued by this as an option. I’m doing a first plains game hunt to KZN in 2025. Someone had recently gone with the outfitter and taken a hyaena at night, I presume with bait involved?

Trying to work out if this is a worthwhile hunt or not. I’m keen to try and maximise my time there. May also be burning the candle at both ends doing a day hunt and then a night hunt? Not overly fussed on bushpigs at this stage.

Anyone done it? Recommend it? Are there any other night time hunts worth considering?

I’m also very aware that taking a cites species will probably massively hold up at dip and pack?

As a side note when thinking about it, rabies vaccines worthwhile for over there? Suppose getting bitten by a dog or anything is possible..
I've done hyena by glassing, electronic caller (last light) and using bits of my elephant as bait (used remnants of a old leopard blind, daylight, no spotlights allowed).

Also did baited bush pig in KZN, hunting plains game by day and bush pig at night using a red light with a car battery turned up just enough to shoot.

That week hunting all day and then most of the night in KZN is one of my most memorable trips ever. PH was totally committed to getting me a pig and excellent plains game.

That is not correct. According to the US Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, if bitten by a rabid animal effective treatment is possible. I would post the link to the details, but that's not allowed, so just search and you'll find the details. Mayo Clinic and WebMD also have info.

July 2025 my RSA list is cape Buffalo, zebra, and the focus completely on spotted hyena.

Euro skull will go on my bookshelf next to my bobcat.

Can't wait.

Very much appreciate all the information about rabies.
I've been all over the world including Middle East and India. With all the shots uncle Sam gave me I don't typically get worried about such things. However, I'll dig into rabies more because of this thread.

Safe hunting lads

Good Morning x84958
I have read your post about Jamy Traut and your hunt in Caprivi. I am planning such a hunt for 2026, Oct with Jamy.
Just a question , because I will combine Caprivi and Panorama for PG, is the daily rate the same the week long, I mean the one for Caprivi or when in Panorama it will be a PG rate ?
thank you and congrats for your story.
Best regards
Philippe from France

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
