Well, in my humble opinion, judging from the size of that spoor and by the prominent 'nail ' marks, I would also go for spotted hyena...
Spotted Hyaena tracks show claws on the ground. The front footprint is always larger than the hind one
You are correct, Willem, that is the back track of a spotted hyena. The back paw always has a scuff mark leading into the track, as you can see clearly in the road photo, because they drag their bag legs. The Brown hyena also show claw marks, but their pads are completely different, as shown in your middle photo.
