IMPORTANT: New Firearm/Weapon Transfer License In Frankfurt Germany

Received this email a couple of days ago regarding traveling through Frankfurt Airport in Germany with firearm/weapon. It should make the whole Frankfurt process a lot easier. Figured you would all want to know!

Dear Sir or Madam,

via this E-Mail we would like to inform you about changes in the process of applying for transfer licenses for your customers who are hunters, sports shooters and other weapons owners.

If your customers travel to foreign countries via the airport in Frankfurt, an application for a transfer license must be placed with the weapon authority of Frankfurt.

Up until now, the applications and the issuance of the permits took place via E-Mail.

From November 01, 2018 the applications and the issuance of the permits can only be placed online via the following link:

www.frankfurt.de/mitnahmeerlaubnis

The documents necessary for the application such as identification documents or weapons permits from the customers home countries can be uploaded via the application portal.

The fee of 20 € for the permit can be paid online as well. The following online payment systems can be used at present:

• PayPal
• Master Card, Visa
• GiroPay

If the application is approved, you will receive an E-Mail with a link to download and print the permit.

In addition to the permit document a certificate with security features for counterfeit security will be attached to the E-Mail. Please print this document as well and present both documents to the customs authority at the airport in Frankfurt am Main.

We hope to have made the application process more transparent and easy to understand for you with this online processing portal.

Every one who can now governments etc are reaching into your pocket. I first hunted AFRICA in 1994 and it was a breeze to travel with guns. It’s was a breeze to ship my trophies and the shipping charges were reasonable. Airlines appreciated my business as did the countries we hunted. Now it seems every one associated with your hunt is trying to figure out how to charge you something extra and run! Unfortunately it’s becoming a bigger and bigger hassle every hunt I book. It’s getting Very frustrating and I feel for our future hunters.

Got confirmation from my local SCI chapter who have been in touch with Frankfurt:
If you are transiting Frankfurt and have a valid European Weapon Passport, there are no need for more paperwork..

anyone know if you need to put ammunition and/or suppressors on the permit? Also, we're flying through on the way back, so no clue how much ammo I'll have left, but my thought was to put what I am carrying since I will likely be traveling with the empty cases on the way home.

Yep. It is a thing within Europe. Our government agencies issue them, and then you can travel between European countries with firearms, without major complications.

You still need to be able to explain (or rather prove) to the authorities where you're going and why you are travelling with guns should they ask you. And when visiting UK you still need UK documents along with that.

I couldn’t find a good answer so I went ahead and filled it out and paid the $25 euros. I was never asked to see that paperwork when traveling through the airport. To me it was worth the little bit of extra cash just in case someone decided that I needed it that day.

It is a pretty painless application, I was impressed with the simple process. I had my Canadian export documents to copy information from, and since they matched with the German documents, no problem and no delays or concerns on arrival. They thoroughly checked all documents, coming and going. I left my rifles and ammo with the customs office for safekeeping while I did a couple days visiting in Germany. Not a direct connection / "checked through" situation.

One thing I learned that you should note: International flights arrive from Canada (Lufthansa) at Terminal 1. Flights leaving for Namibia ( Condor ) are from Terminal 2. If you have left firearms with customs, you are supposed to go to terminal 2 early, check in, then ask the airline to have airport security personnel transport your firearms from customs office in terminal 1 to the airline check in at terminal 2, where you then declare to the airline, have them checked and put them on the flight. Instead I just showed up at the terminal 1 customs office, wanting to transport between terminals myself. They had no way to deal with the transfer, since I didn't have a current German firearms permit I couldn't carry my own firearms between terminals. They were very helpful, and provided me with an escort of two police officers, a ride in a police car, entry thru a side security door and escort to the front of the line to check in.
