Im certain this topic has been covered before but my search skills didn't yield a result.

I only recently bought a .375 H&H in a bolt action. Of course, because this sickness spreads quickly and it's symptoms are predictable, I'm already thinking about another rifle.

And the more I look at Ruger No 1's the more I am getting smitten. What has happened? Brief, lustful crush or is a Ruger No 1 a thoughtful add to the safe? Thinking .416 RM or either of the .458's. I know there are some die hard fans on here. Why do you love them? What makes them different for you? Any different technique to shooting that action? Thoughts, funny limericks and, of course, pictures and info are appreciated.

And what makes the Tropical version different?

Thanks all. You are mostly fine folks, but I fear you are all a bad influence.

I have two No. 1s a 30-06 and a 416 Ribgy and I love them both.

You’re tougher than me. I love number ones, but not in the bigger calibers. If I were looking for a Number one to complement a three seventy five it would be something in the seven mm Mauser class.

I'm not tough. I'm stupid. These two traits are often mixed up. After a regrettable affair with a 6.5 Creedmoor I swore I wouldn't add a rifle unless it was (a) different from what I alteady own, and (b) intended only for hunting animals. Thus, I only have room to go up in caliber, not down. Im too cheap to own two of anything.

I only own a #1 in .458 Lott and a #3 in .45/70, but have owned a few others. Strong, reliable, four inches shorter for same barrel length versus a bolt gun, no magazine length limits and classic looking.

I ran both a .375 bolt action of my own making (REM 700 platform) and a Model 70 in .416 two years ago in Africa (buff, zebra, others). Picked up a lightly-used Ruger No 1 in 450/400 3” NE for this May’s DG Safari. Rifle scoped with a Leupold VX6HD 1-6 and low Alaska Arms left-side QR scope rings weighs 9.4 lbs empty including its new Decelerator pad. I like to carry rounds on the buttstock, which happens to really work well on a Ruger No 1 for reloading and adds “about” a half pound. Regular barrel profile, not the bigger D tropical weight barrel. And, it shoots Hornady factory DGS rounds at MOA at 100! 10 lbs works well off sticks and is fine off-hand (less kick than my .416) assuming you square up a bit, hold the rifle firmly and put ur weight a bit forward. Not going to do it all day but 5-6 practice rounds is no problem. Ruger No 1’s look cool, are very handy, a bit unusual and scream sophistication. One bonus - IMHO wood stocks are quieter in the field than my customary Manner’s stocks so add another point for the Ruger No 1! They’ve gone up a bit in price recently but I can see myself adding one in .375 someday, or even in a lighter caliber than .300 WM for varmints or UK stalking.

I’m a big fan of the No. 1 and own two of them. A 303 British and a 300 H&H. The No. 1 is a fine stalking rifle, and in heavy-barrel versions, a great varminter. I don’t think it’s the best choice for thick-skinned dangerous game. I’ve practiced shooting and reloading using a wrist band cartridge holder. I think I’m proficient, but I’m still not as quick on follow up shots as with a bolt action. When lives are possibly in the balance, I think it’s wise to use a rifle capable of rapid follow up shots. For me, that’s not a single shot.

Thought not related to hunting, the flat sides of the Ruger are perfect for engraving. I've seen them in European calibers with Stags on one side, boar on the other. An African caliber with various species of African Dangerous game on the receiver sides would be very attractive in my opinion.

At the risk of being ostracized on AH, I’m here to help! Lol. Having been shot at, charged and enlisted to help catch a few poachers in Africa, I would no more take a Ruger #1 to Africa than a BB gun. There, I said it! Flame away!! :A Outta:

No need to grab the fire hose just yet. All opinions are good ones here...for now...on this topic. I appreciate the input from you and @Doug3006 . It sounds like the reasoning is based on speed of getting the second (or third or fourth) round loaded when time is of the essence?

I saw one on GB or somewhere that was engraved. It was nice, but I mostly keep light engraving on my quail gun for now. All excess $'s go to getting me to Africa.

I bought my first No 1 just a couple years ago. I am buying them to give to my grandkids. Like others have said, I think the No 1 is perfect, up to a point. Smaller calibers, up to and including 30-06. That's just my opinion.

Also, take a look at this thread, lots of no1 photos and discussion

If you haven’t read the hunt report Scott is referring to you need to!

I fell in love with the simplicity of the Ruger No. 1 and now own four. It's my favorite rifle to hunt with & while sitting in a stand, I have taken deer with them ambidextrously off both shoulders depending on which way I had to turn. I have a 6.5x55, 275 Rigby, 303 British & a 9.3x74r which are all excellent choices for hunting in the southeastern woods of the USA. I have two Winchester 1885's with long octagon barrels in 375 H&H and 405 Win but these rifles are not nearly as compact & nimble as my Rugers even if they are both fun to shoot.

While all of my single-shot falling-blocks are nice, I really like the ones chambered for a rimmed cartridge a lot. The rim makes it easy to grab the end of the bullet especially when wearing gloves or pulling it out of a cartridge holder. Loading the rifle with a scope over the breech is easy with a long cartridge so my No. 1S chambered in 9.3x74r is particular favorite. Ruger No. 1's can be a bit of a challenge to scope properly since you need more eye relief but my Minox ZA5 1.5-8x32 is an excellent choice on that rifle.

My 9.3x74r ammo makes the 6.5x55 look tiny

Personally I like smaller scopes on these rifles so options similar to the Meopta R2 1-6x24 RD I have on my 303 British are a good choice to consider. I had a larger S&B Klassik on my 6.5 Swede for a while & to my eye it looked disproportionately big for the size of the compact rifle.

I briefly considered getting a larger bore Ruger No. 1 Tropical at one point. Because of my aforementioned penchant for rimmed cartridges, I was looking hard at the 450/400 as an option. I briefly got dragged into a bidding war on a rare 404 Jeffery because I love classic chamberings but the other guy was loonier than me so he prevailed. Eventually I settled on a left-handed bolt action 458 Win Mag in case I ever go up against anything big & dangerous. That doesn't mean I won't eventually own a larger Ruger No. 1 one day. Acquiring them can be addictive.

So poops on me for searching No 1 and not No1. But nonetheless, all of this is really helpful. I think what I'm hearing is if I find an interesting cartridge in No1 and in pretty wood, I should just succumb to my weakness and dive in. That case hardened No1 on that other thread was awfully nice. That wood on yours in the tree stand is stellar as well. What's more manly than to admit that pretty wood is a weakness?
