J.W. Tolley shotgun turns out to be a Double Rifle

When searching auctions for good deals, it pays to read past the heading and read the detail description.

This was the case when I saw a heading that read; "J. W. Tolly Rotary-Underlever Hammergun SxS Shotgun 500 Black Powder Express"... but the detail description read; "J.W. Tolley Rotary Underlever 500 Black Powder Express Double rifle"

When the auction ended I was the high bidder at less than 1/2 the low estimate. Take a look .... what do you think?

Very nice. You did well. Please provide a shooting report in due course. Is this your Christmas present to yourself?

SWEET!! If it all checks out, shoot it and enjoy it.
I love my T&L Pryce 500bpe double

With the money you saved, and assuming it is in good shape, get that blacking off the action and have Turnbull do a proper case hardened and colored finish.

Looks like you got a very nice deal. Have fun shooting the old double.

Holding history in your hands makes hunting more enjoyable IMO. Well done. It would be right at home on a Whitetail hunt......FWB

Hello all, I got the double in hand today. First think I did was to look down the barrels .... there is rifling ... its not a shotgun. :D

The chambers and the rifling were MINT. But when I inserted a 500 bpe cartridge into the chambers, it was way too loose. The chambers were bigger. Turns out this is NOT a 500 bpe. after all, its the larger 577-500 No. 2 bpe. Take a look at the difference between the two cartridges. I have loaded some ammo and a field test will follow. .... Let me know what you think?

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
