So with shipping - permitting - I will be the proud owner of a 416 Taylor - what should I know - that a google search will not tell me ?

appreciate it everyone

You probably know but I think Norma still makes factory ammo. Only solids last I checked.

I bought five ten count boxes of Norma solids for nine to get a supply of property headstanped ammo… then formed another two hundred pieces of bras from four fifty eight win mag to roll practice anmo with…

I absolutely love my Taylor… [emoji6] rigby ballistics from a standard length Mauser action with only slightly more recoil than my three seven five..

My pet load uses a four hundred grain Barnes TSX and a good bit of IMR forty sixty four powder

What brand/model rifle?
Husqvarna Model 640 so either a FN action or one of their own ! Impulse buy - but hey will see when she arrives

Excellent - have forty once fired somewhere - so good idea will use 458 brass for practice - which dies did you use ?

I too absolutely love my semi custom Interarms Whitworth .416 Taylor. Much milder recoil than my .416 Rigby in a lighter rifle. I’ve only reloaded 400gr Barnes Originals over 70.5gr of RL15 so far. I might have to eventually change powder because Alliant powders are generally MIA and priced as if it were gold dust if you do find some. LOL

Hendershots will load with your components. Or theirs, And for a great price. They also offer a load ladder for you to dial in.

I got dies from Redding a couple months ago. While they were "'custom series" dies, they were already made so I didn't have to wait for them. I was told by the guy that I spoke with that Redding usually keeps some on shelf. My experience only.

Good buy..... k98 action? Fits in very well ;)))
Close to 425 Express.
Brass easy to get without trouble and costy tools from 458Winni or with special expander, from 300 Win brass!
Premium Bullets plentyful available, two loads 350 and 400 Grain cover all hunting around the world from plain to bush and BG.
Get Your stock heavy and well balanced. 416 Taylor kicks and doesnt shove like 416 Rigby!
Have fun and good hunting!

Congratulations! Cant wait to see the pics when you get it

It is indeed an FN. Husky never made a large ring 98 themselves. I have one in 9.3 x 62 (converted).

Don't forget about the 350 GR TTSX - .286 SD. Hubba hubba.

Guys this is @ the lower end of expectations - syn stock etc - but hey it is a calibre I have been after - well no that is not true - it was cheap full bore - so wtf not ! my defence !

You know more than me - appreciate the input - I thought they made chainsaws + washing machines !

mmm you are encouraging me - have reamers coming for a 318wr/425 wr build with quick change barrels - probably off a savage action - think stainless with baby poop Rhodesian camo over in a tactical stock !

The Husqvarna 640, FN Belgium action, is the perfect donor, opened up for the .416 Taylor. I have of few of these Belgian/Swede rifles.

My .416 Taylor was built on a Santa Barbara Mauser 98, 22"-barrel, Bell and Carlson stock, 3 position safety, NECG front and rear sights. Shooting it was as easy as any .375 H&H.

The .416 Taylor is one of the few "balanced cartridges" (as Craig Boddington wrote), like the 30-30 Winchester, 7x57 Mauser, 9.3x62, that just work in a standard action, efficient powder to velocity performance within bullet weight design parameters, and reasonable recoil.
Do a search here for "416 Taylor Advice". Within this thread is some valuable reloading data from Ken Waters Pet Loads, as well as Pierre van der Walt's " African Dangerous Cartridges". Good stuff.
Looking at my reloading notes, I started with IMR-3031. Started low, considering pressure. Later I switched to AA-2230.
Better powders are available today.

Accurate Arms has published pressure tested data.
Other sources list H4895 and Varget giving 2300+ fps. I would like to see pressure tested data from Hodgdon.

My target is 2300 fps, accuracy, no pressure. I don't need to get 2400 fps (currently published Rigby data), rather last century field results of Kynoch velocities. The Rigby worked then, so why try to extract the last few fps velocity?

As Always, do your homework, cross reference several sources of reliable loading data and work up carefully.

Case forming is simple. I have used W-W or Norma new .458 Win Mag cases, Imperial Sizing Dies wax, and one pass through Redding .416 Taylor sizing dies. Really easy, and the cases don't stretch, COAL is within spec. Deburr, chamfer, prime, charge and load. I do not crimp with the seating die. As the last step Lee Factory Crimp Die produces consistent cartridge dimensions and firing.

Let's see some pictures of your rifle, and range report.

.416 Taylor is a versatile cartridge. I see one on the horizon, FN 98 action.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
