Now that I’ve decided to thin my rifle herd to the one DG rifle that will go to Africa with me, I would like opinions on the final mod that I am considering: Magnaport. This .416 Ruger on a Mark X action is 10.3# unloaded and I do manage the recoil, but have read the ‘porting does help muzzle rise which could be a benefit to follow up shots. What say?

No faster way to depreciate the value of a rifle or piss off everyone in your hunting party than adding any sort of brake.

"If only I had my barrel ported, I could have gotten off another shot" said nobody ever.
Just don't see enough benefit for a rifle meant for reasonably close work.

I don’t see that advertised nowadays but I guess some can do it. I remember it being advertised a lot in the late 80’s I believe.
If anything I would look at a brake because it’s removable.

If the barrel was threaded for a brake it would be an option. But still it will change the POI with vs without so it will still be necessary to practice without the brake.

Seems to me that the money spent on the threading/brake/magnaport would be better spent on practice ammo and range time.

NOT A BIG FAN OF RECOIL. HAVE GENTRY CUSTOM'S "QUIET" BRAKES ON A BUNCH OF OUR RIFLES.

Have shot some 44MAG handguns with magnaports and they reduced muzzle rise and while it was a bit louder than a straight barrel it was much quieter than the current muzzle breaks. if I was going to add something to a rifle barrel it would be magnaporting vs a break.

My Dakota Traveler in 338 Lapua and 416 Rigby are both magnaported. Definitely cuts the muzzle jump but the increase in noise is no where close to a break,.

I am right there with @SETH RINGER and have grown averse to recoil with age. For me, magnaport was the best option to reduce recoil without increasing the noise level at the muzzle.

I had it down on a rifle for one of my kids. It did help with recoil and dd not affect accuracy. There was a drop in velocity-50 fps I think but I don’t recall exactly. I wouldn’t think that would be a big issue on a large bore. The noise does increase a bit but not as bad as with a muzzle brake

I had my Ruger No 1, 300WM Magnaported back in the day were doing so was popular and I was too young to know better. The thing is excruciatingly loud. Aside from that I can see no good reason to do that on a single shot rifle,

I’m a big fan, and have at least four firearms that have the original process, including a .500 A2. It significantly reduces muzzle jump and isn’t any noisier. Used in conjunction with a Rhodesian sling, it will dramatically increase the speed of your second shot.

Magna-porting will instantly degrade the value of any fine firearm and my experience the reduction in recoil is negligible. It does help muzzle rise which in a dangerous situation could aid in faster follow up shots. It was a great idea in the 90's. If a guy is real serious about recoil, muzzle blast, and noise, thread the barrel and buy a magnum suppressor, OR practice with a muzzle brake and hearing protection, take it off for hunts, you're not going to feel the recoil on a hunt. And if after that recoil is still a concern, step down a caliber or two. Pride gets in the way fellas, I've had to come to terms with the fact that the 500 Jeffery just may not work with my aging body and brain anymore.

I have to chime in and say… I have hated brakes since their inception… most of my experience has been at the range where a half dozen tacti-cool types are knocking everyone’s ear-pro off their heads, firing some small caliber braked 16” MSR at a rate of about 1 trigger pull per second… I find them annoying and inconsiderate…

That said, under certain circumstance I might now be a convert..

I purchased a 300 prc about a year ago that came with a factory removable brake… initially I thought I’d just remove the brake and put a thread protector on the gun…

After I shot it a couple of times with the brake attached, I changed my mind… it brings the recoil from a lightweight 300 magnum down to below typical 308 recoil levels and makes the rifle a dream to shoot…

I am mindful of other shooters when I am rarely at a public range with the rifle (I’ve got a 300 yard KD range set up out at our lease when I shoot it more often than not)…

But at this point I don’t intend on shooting the rifle without the brake… the older I get, the less tolerance I have for getting beat up by my rifles…

Brakes are great for being able to get back on target for long range and for spotting hits for target shooting. The ONLY downside to a brake of any kind is the increased sound and concussion to the shooter and mainly others around. Magna port is less loud and less effective at recoil reduction but they do work. If it allows you to shoot a larger gun better than go for it. I don't ever worry about what the next guy who may buy a rifle I have wants, do what you want....none of this is cheap anyways. The thing about Magna port is its always on. If you have a brake installed you can have a quality gunsmith install a virtually invisible thread protector that if done correctly you will never notice. More options there. The idea of a rifle is to hit where you want so if it helps do it. Same reason we us sticks to shoot you don't hear people saying much that they are against sticks! But we all practice without sticks too if we are doing it right. On a big bore you can go with a radial brake as you won't typically be laying on the ground and get dust signature. Side ports are very effective but super loud. If you just want 15-20% felt recoil reduction than the Magna port is a good option.

I was focused more on the benefit of reduced muzzle rise but any reduction in recoil without the excesses of a true brake would definitely be a plus.

Magna port does help reduce muzzle rise. There is one other negative...... at dawn, dusk, dark it adds flash. Not a typical hunting situation but after a wounded animal or walking out of the bush and confronted a flash is possible and can effect follow up as well.

Nugget here. A guide gave me the nickname as I looked similar to Nugent at the time. Hunting for over 50 years yet I am new to hunting in another country and its inherent game species. I plan to do archery. I have not yet ruled out the long iron as a tag-along for a stalk. I am still deciding on a short list of game. Not a marksman but better than average with powder and string.
