Mannlicher-Schoenauer, history, models, performance, features, storys

View attachment 349740 HWL- there are a surprisingly many MS rifles still in shootable condition in South Africa. I believe everyone should have owned a 6.5 x54 at some point of their lives. My current project is getting a milder load for my 9.5x 57. Above: 260 gn Nosler, 270 Woodleigh and local 220gn Impala solid brass which I’m hoping to use as my rifle is so light it kicks lick a mule!
Have you tried a slip on limbsaver pad? Or a strap on past pad?

I sympathize as my 1905 in 9x56 with 250 grain packs a pretty good wallop. Since the stock on my rifle had already been shortened by a previous owner I added a pachmeyer decelerated pad. Made all the difference.

Some good looking rifles on here I will have to pick one of these up one day.

Twenty five years ago, for around five years, I had a 7x64 GK, long rifle 60 cm barrel, double trigger. Made in 1964 with the last shotgun safety type. With a 1,5-6x36 Hensoldt scope in a side mount made by Gastinne-Renette. Lovely rifle and great scope and mount. Unfortunately I don't have any picture of it...I got two Red Deer with the rifle using my handloads with H-Mantel 173 grs bullets and R22. I received "an offer I couldn't refuse", as the Godfather said...Yesterday, because this thread, I remember I buy an original single trigger and trigger plate from one member of the Mannlicher-Schoenauer Collectors in the USA. Starting with the 1952 model, Steyr changed the design of the trigger set up for use doble or single trigger with a very simple change of the trigger plate and trigger itself. So, single or double triggers sets can be bought at Steyr to change the one in the rifle. As I am used to single direct triggers, I put the single in mine. But the buyer wanted the double trigger. So, I still have that single trigger and plate..!

Best!

Congratulations HWL on a fantastic rifle!

Hi John.

I collect MS's for on to 25 years and do have quite a few in most of the calibers. The rifle that knocks the fillings from my molars is the 9,3x62. It is so light and the comb is sharp enough to cut your cheek if you not careful. The other calibers up to the .458 WM is easy on the shoulder.

I am doubtful if the Impala will make much of a difference, To obtain easy feeding you will have to seat it quite deep which do increase pressure and you might find yourself back to square one. However, please give feedback.

Hi Clodo

Any possibility that I can take that trigger and plate off your hands. I bought a very nice 270 full stock with double triggers, albeit, one trigger has been removed!! I don’t mind the single trigger but the plate now has an empty hole and I would very much like to replace it with a single trigger plate.

Not exactly Mannlicher, but relevant. According to legend, L. Brezhnev liked Mannlicher so much that he asked Tula gunsmiths to make a replica. They developed a replica "based on" - their own bolt, but the overall design, the design of the rotary magazine, and some other features-like Mannlicher's

Finally, my Mannlicher-Schoenauer is back from gunsmith....

It already has an old Hensoltd Wetzlar 4x scope, but without side adjustment.

I got a not so old Kahles 2,3-7x32 with side adjustment.

My gunsmith made new claws for the scope, fitting in the old bases, that both scopes can be used.

Well done, beautiful mounts.
Any of you guys interested in joining our Mannlicher Shoenauer Club for free! Send WhatsApp to +27832621699

Is that the same stock?
Yes, it is. It came out quite bright when I restored it. Originally, the factory "painted" it dark.
Now, we call it "the yellow one"

In 1939 Stoeger offered "Stock of specially selected pretty wood" as a $20 'cost option' (nearly $450 in 2024 dollars).

Mine truely is not. I rather think it is a kind of palett wood. I just oiled it with "Schaftol", something like Ballistol, to waterprotect stocks.
I did not wanted to paint a pig, redleg would say.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
