Terrorist Attack – U.S. Embassy Maputo, Mozambique (April 23, 2025)

Event:
The U.S. government has received information that terrorists attacked villages on the edge of the Niassa Special Reserve near Nairoto, before entering the reserve and taking hostages at a private hunting lodge. Mozambican security forces are engaged. Stay alert for increased violence on the southeastern and eastern borders of the Niassa Special Reserve. The U.S. Embassy in Mozambique continues to monitor the situation and remains committed to working with the Government of Mozambique to counter violent extremism.

Location: Niassa Special Reserve on the borders of Niassa and Cabo Delgado Provinces

Actions to Take:

  • Reconsider travel to the Niassa Special Reserve and surrounding villages and hunting properties.
  • Review personal security plans.
  • Monitor local media for updates on changing conditions.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security updates.

Large parts of Africa never were safe and probably for a long time will not be safe. That is part of the equation when hunting in some of the remote and underdeveloped/mismanaged parts of Africa.

Better make sure my wife does not see this thread...

My thoughts go out to the hostages and victims of these animals.

It is not about the risk of being attacked and robbed, with or without physical violence, but about the current trend of taking people hostage, holding them in custody for years and then but still killing it. Whether one wants to take this risk for the passion for hunting is another question.

Events like this should at least make one consider taking out K&R (kidnapping and ransom) insurance for this kind of trip.

Every country of origin has a very different policy on how to support (or not) kidnapped citizens and having professional back-up can be helpful.

Africa is back sliding after the colonial infrastructures and policies are finally collapsing. I know not a politically correct statement. OR maybe they already had a long time ago?

That only works in the movies and it does not protect you from being kidnapped. Hostage rescue is a matter of its own, and it also puts other people in danger. A hostage rescue cost the lives of two French soldiers a few years ago. Many countries don't do this and also don't negotiate with the kidnappers.

Respectfully I think you have been watching too many movies.

Hostage rescues are extremely rare and the vast majority of insured hostages come home for a ransom paid for by the insurance policy. Rescues or even attempts are less than 1% of the cases.

I have many friends who work in the industry, including as negotiators.

The policies are underwritten by some of the world's biggest insurers AIG, Chubb, Lloyd's etc. They are purchased commonly and continuously by some of the world's largest companies including Coke, J&J, every major international oil and mining company, many of the world's largest banks etc. They are a serious and important product.

They also offer aftercare for the victim and their family by way of counselling and disability etc.

For those who want to get beyond fictional depictions here is a short article from Forbes on the subject:

For people travelling in parts of the world where kidnapping is a risk K&R insurance should be a consideration.

I do not know anything besides what i see on the news, They should run their country to the ground if they please.

We are talking about tourists who put themselves in danger and were kidnapped. The problem of workers kidnapping is something else. This is a lucrative business for organized crime in some countries.

There are still enough tourists, reporters and employees of various AID organizations who are hostage of Islamist terrorists since years as proof that not everything is working as planned.

We are. And K&R insurance is available to individuals who travel in dangerous areas, the same way that medical evacuation insurance is. Just like companies buy fleet insurance for their cars but you still have to buy your own insurance if you drive your own car.

The vast majority of kidnappings world-wide see the hostage come home safely because in a vast majority of cases it is a business. There is a small minority who end up "in the orange jumpsuits" (industry term) who have no hope of coming home. That is a tragedy.

Even ISIS though uses kidnap for ransom to generate income and even they have in hundreds of documented cases returned hostages after the ransom was paid.

Here are some examples of ISIS Syria kidnappings where over 200 people were recovered safely:

Having insurance to pay the ransom, and professional negotiators etc to help that arrangement get created and fulfilled is a lot better than your wife trying to do it for you crying with the bank manager for a mortgage so you can get home to see your kids again.

It is something a traveller in a dangerous or unstable area should consider.

I have no idea why suggesting to people that they consider this risk and how to both avoid or mitigate it when travelling in Africa offends.

Previously, the various incidents I had heard of were around the coastal areas, in particularly around the centers servicing the oil companies. This latest attack is much further inland and appears to have deliberatly targeted internnational hunters. That may indicate a change of targetting which could easily spread to other areas throughout Africa.

trperk1, I bought the Kimber Caprivi 375 back in an earlier post. You attached a target with an impressive three rounds touching 100 yards. I took the 2x10 VX5 off and put a VX6 HD Gen 2 1x6x24 Duplex Firedot on the rifle. It's definitely a shooter curious what loads you used for the group. Loving this rifle so fun to shoot. Africa 2026 Mozambique. Buff and PG. Any info appreciated.
Ready for the hunt with HTK Safaris
