A lot of interesting posts on this thread and a wide variety of musical interests.
My all time favorite band is a little obscure and somehow never really met with commercial success.
As a kid, my mom listened to a little Gypsy Jazz - Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli so the duo of guitar and violin was imprinted at a young age.
In the’70s my brothers were real fans of The Dixie Dregs (which became The Dregs and then more or less The Steve Morse Band))
They are still my favorite band and I think no other has really approached their unique style which is quite vast ranging from country, to southern rock to Celtic influenced to some impressive classical pieces.
Steve Morse was Guitar Player Magazine guitarist of the year so often that they retired him to allow Satriani and Vai a chance.
Violinist Alan Sloan, bassist Andy West, drummer Rod Morgenstien and T. Lavitz on keyboard were the classic lineup but Mark O’Connor did fiddle for them as well although not as goos a Sloan IMO.
Back to the Grapelli violin, O’Connor did play on one of my favorite recordings - Stephane Grapelli & David Grisman, recorded in 1981. It’s fantastic.
Damn near wore that record out!
Now, in the Gypsy Jazz vein, Joscho Stephan is about he top guitar player around - definitely worth a listen.
Grab some good headphones and give any of the Dregs albums, the Grisman Grapelli album and some Joscho Stephan a listen - could change your life!
