NAMIBIA: Namibia Safari Corporation 2018

Great report, looks like you had a wonderful first safari with many memorable moments and some great trophies.

So glad you had an awesome hunt. Hunting Eland in Namibia was one of my favorite hunts to date. Great report and great trip.

Congrats on a great hunt and thanks for the report and pictures. I think most of us will read the whole report.

Vanguard2279, can you explain?

I frequently attach or de-attach bipod on the stock and I have never noticed any significant change in poa/poi, but I also have free floating barrel(s).

The explanation might be in fully bedded barrel, in touch with stock in its full length till fore-end, and that I would understand - because added support - on non-free-floating stock would affect barrel harmonics.

But then I don't know what NULA means? What is NULA?

Sorry for my ignorance.

BTW, congrats on a good hunt!
Mark-Hunter:
NULA is an abbreviation for New Ultralight Arms. I agree with your assessment of the affects of a bipod on a fully bedded barrel. Fortunately, I can now plan for that. The free-floated barrel of the Ruger Guide Gun was not affected similarly.

Thanks for clarification. I was confused with this abbreviation, but of course I do not have any knowledge or experience with... "Nula"...(y) firearms.

BTW in my local language "nula" means zero, which added to my misunderstanding.
Cheers!

Thank you thank you! Great report and pictures! That was one grand adventure snake, bugs and all! Oh and some fine trophies!

..........We loaded Jaco's four-door Land Cruiser. I joked about it resembling the Beverly Hillbillies rolling down the highway. However, none of them had seen the show so the reference was lost.

This should help for next time.

The snake in the pictures was encountered first by Simon who jumped aside. Jaco advised me that it was deadly. I don't recall what it was called. I took a picture. All fifteen inches of it coiled, hissed and charged us. Sure, he only went about six inches, but that was enough for me.
....................

A Horned Puff Adder and a six inch strike would have me backing up.
Happy you were third in line for that little encounter.

Hello Vanguard2211,

Wonderful hunting report.
Thanks for posting it.

By chance did you happen to meet Errens Van der Merwe ?
I don't know if he is related to Jaco or not.
However their last name being the same plus, they both live and PH in the Khomas Hochland Highlands suggests it is very probable.

I salute you for not allowing yourself to get bogged down / distracted by tape measures and record books.
The critters you bagged are all beauties.

I agree with BRICKBURN that the serpent looks like a horned adder but, I'm no expert.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.

Thank you for reading. However, I know that reports that are too long are rarely actually read. Thank you, AfricaHunting, for giving me a community to embrace. I do what I can to spread the word. Everyone be safe out there.

Read every word. Thanks for the effort and sharing your story.

I've received the same type of head wound. Nothing like 25km/h encounter with thorn trees.

Nice Eland and I hope you get your Warthog next year!

I posted the picture of the Giraffes on Facebook with the caption that "All is well in the world when you begin your day with Giraffes".
I wanted to include the photo of Jan as he was truthfully one of my favorite people from this safari.
I had to show a picture of the spiders. They were a little disconcerting. The one in my room was HUGE. I called him Fred. He was a decent roommate.
The closeup of Eland I post to give some perspective on just how massive he was.
And Thank You, Brickburn.

After a chaotic year worth of plans, it appears you had a great hunt. Congratulations. I want to know about that NULA also! I have no idea!

Velo Dog: I was not able to meet Errens. I would draw the same conclusion, though.

sierraone: New Ultralight Arms (www.newultralightarms.com) Great rifles. They are custom-made by Melvin Forbes in West Virginia. My rifle weighs slightly over six pounds with scope. There was an attempt a few years ago to turn out a production rifle by a company called Forbes. They used a Shaw barrel and did not have the options that NULA offers. They struggled with quality control and did not live up to the standards that Melvin expected. They eventually folded. The wait for a NULA can be a year, but you know that it will be perfect.
I have three Forbes rifles. My M24B .30-06 has been on two African hunts and is a great rifle. My M20B in .260 Remington is a decent rifle, but I need to work with it more. I recently picked up another M24B in .270 Winchester and had it rebarreled by Douglas Barrels (they make the barrels for NULA) to 9.3x62mm. It would not extract which is apparently one of the quality control issues that Forbes Rifles had. Melvin will work on Forbes rifles because his name is attached to them. I feel honored to have his hands work on my rifle.
I asked for barrel duplication from Douglas and they did a great job. However, it seemed to me that there was a slight difference. I promptly began working on the barrel channel myself. That didn't end well. Thus, Melvin is rebedding the barrel and giving me a custom paint job. I'm not looking forward to the bill for this, but I know that it will be perfect.

Congrats on a great hunt and thanks for the report, read every word of it, as I believe most of us do.

I have had several great hunts with Jaco, I even recognize the room you stayed in. Your great write-up bring back many happy memories. I hope to go again in 2019.

Great report, thanks for sharing! I think I'd still be running from seeing that snake:eek:

Oh and congratulations!!

Awesome photo
Grew up watching the hillbillies here in New Zealand .
Great hunt Vanguard .
Neat part of the planet to hunt .
Read everyword too , always do , hate to miss something .
Cheers Dory .

I should clarify something. Jaco did not know that I didn't have a good sight picture of an Eland bull when I shot through the brush. That was a long and frustrating day. However, I would hate for hunts to be easy.

By the way .
Have a tote for your wife from me please !
I hate lossing loved ones !
Cheers Dory .

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
